Description
Milady, wife of the feudal baron governing Jeanne's village, occupies a high-status position directly below her husband. Her prominence surfaces upon the baron's return from war, when she witnesses Jeanne's elevated standing among the villagers. Milady openly resents Jeanne, perceiving her influence as a direct challenge to her own authority and social position.

Her envy manifests as she actively brands Jeanne a witch and rallies the villagers against her. Milady's accusations prove instrumental in shifting the community's sentiment to view Jeanne with suspicion and hostility. She leverages her status to pressure the baron and his court against Jeanne, emphasizing the threat Jeanne poses to the established order. Confronting the baron about Jeanne's growing power, she declares, "That farmer bitch is in league with the devil," and observes, "The villagers respect her more than anyone now. More than you even."

Milady's antagonism intensifies after seeing public admiration for Jeanne during a church gathering, which undermines her sense of superiority. She directly incites the baron to punish Jeanne, contributing to the mobilization of forces that pursue her. Milady's actions stem from a desire to maintain the existing social structure and eliminate perceived rivals, reinforcing her role as a catalyst for Jeanne's persecution.
