Description
Yumi Hanazono lives in Flower Town with her family, who run a flower shop, fostering her deep love for plants. She sports long auburn hair in a braided ponytail tied with a yellow bow, blue eyes, freckles, and typically wears a pink skirt, red vest over a white puffy-sleeved shirt, red shoes, and white socks.
Though she struggles academically, Yumi possesses remarkable artistic talent, especially in drawing, and dreams of becoming a manga artist. This passion sometimes leads to poor choices, like sketching portraits of the wealthy Mrs. Fukurokoji on the walls of her mansion during the Flower Festival. Caught and punished, she had to clean the defaced property. While cleaning, she rescued a dandelion Mrs. Fukurokoji planned to destroy, replanting it in a tulip field. This act of kindness towards the flower attracted two fairies, Kakimaru and Keshimaru, who rewarded her with magical abilities.
Yumi combines spirited energy with a vivid imagination. She exhibits tomboyish tendencies, favoring sports, outdoor activities, and friendships mostly with boys. Sometimes criticized by peers for being "unwomanly," she occasionally tries conforming to more traditionally feminine behaviors, but these efforts are usually short-lived. Despite this, she remains kind-hearted and empathetic, especially towards flowers and those in need.
The fairies gave her a wand made from a tulip blossom and a matching pendant. By drawing in the air with the wand and chanting "Pastel Poppuru Poppin-pa!", she brings her sketches to life. These creations can be everyday objects, clothing, living beings, fantastical entities, or replicas of existing people or animals, some possessing magical properties like memory-inducing clocks or winged boots enabling gliding. Her powers have strict limits: each creation exists temporarily before vanishing into flower petals, signaled by a flash from her pendant; she cannot summon duplicate items; and new manifestations cannot appear until prior ones vanish. However, these rules prove inconsistent, with summon durations fluctuating unpredictably and occasional instances of multiple simultaneous summons occurring.
Her first use of magic created a horse (modified by the fairies into a pegasus) to reach the Flower Festival. Later, she generated a replacement dress after ruining her father's contest entry. She frequently used these abilities to tackle various challenges, with outcomes ranging from success to complications due to her magic's fleeting nature.
A significant event occurred when summer snowfall hit Flower Town, coinciding with Yumi suddenly losing her magic. The fairies explained this stemmed from turmoil in their homeland, the Land of Flowers, where the queen had fallen into an enchanted sleep, causing plants to wither and giant insects to overrun the realm. Determined to help, Yumi convinced the fairies to take her there. Using a portal created together, she and several human acquaintances—including her friend Kenta Misawa, who found the portal first—were transported to the troubled land.
In the Land of Flowers, Yumi learned that retrieving "silver drops" from a distant mountain might awaken the queen. Equipped with a glider by the fairies, she and Kenta embarked on the journey, eventually regrouping with other companions after a crash landing. Their mission faced sabotage from Saburo Kunimitsu, Mrs. Fukurokoji's butler, who sought the drops believing them valuable. Upon realizing their true restorative purpose, he gave them to Yumi. In a climactic moment, she temporarily regained her magic to manifest wings, flying through insect swarms to administer the drops to the queen. This revived the monarch, restoring the realm. Afterwards, Yumi and the others returned to Flower Town, with the fairies staying in their homeland, bidding her farewell from afar.
Her family includes her father Ichiro, who runs the flower shop, exhibiting gentleness with occasional stubbornness; her mother Momoko, who manages the household and sometimes shows frustration towards her husband's clumsiness; and her grandfather Dankichi, an adventurous traveler who disapproves of Ichiro's career choice but holds affection for his granddaughter.
Yumi's social circle includes the fairies Kakimaru and Keshimaru, her magical mentors and companions despite frequent squabbles. Her classmate Kenta Misawa joins many of her adventures and harbors an unreciprocated crush on her. Conversely, Yumi holds a precocious crush on Kenta's older brother Kyohei, who works at her family's shop and remains unaware of her feelings.
Her interactions with Mrs. Fukurokoji evolve from initial antagonism—rooted in the mural incident and differing temperaments—toward a grudging mutual respect. In an official crossover OVA, she collaborates with other magical heroines (Persia, Mami, and Emi) to combat extraterrestrial threats, though this remains a standalone adventure without altering her personal storyline.
