Description
Carlos Lopez is a human child central to the Transformers conflict on Earth. Approximately 10 to 12 years old when first involved, he demonstrates skills in sports and mechanics, with mechanics emphasized more in expanded materials than the animated series. His interests include hip-hop music and skateboarding, and he shares a long-standing friendship with Rad White since kindergarten.
Exploring caverns beneath a local observatory with Rad, Carlos discovers advanced alien technology. Against his advice, Rad touches a green pentagonal artifact, activating dormant systems and sending distress signals into space. This event attracts both Autobot and Decepticon forces to Earth. Carlos witnesses Megatron's arrival and later Optimus Prime's, marking the start of the Transformers' open conflict on Earth during their escape.
Carlos, Rad, and their friend Alexis subsequently ally with the Autobots. Carlos partners with the Mini-Con Grindor, part of the Street Action Team alongside Rad's High Wire and Alexis's Sureshock. He actively joins Autobot missions to locate scattered Mini-Cons across Earth, venturing into diverse environments including the Grand Canyon, Antarctica, dense forests, subway tunnels, underwater ruins, volcanic islands, and the Sahara Desert. In the Sahara, he accidentally triggers an ancient temple trap, nearly harming himself and Rad.
His involvement extends to aiding during battles. He helps extinguish a Decepticon-caused forest fire by repurposing Optimus Prime's trailer to pump lake water and assists in evacuating endangered animals. During a carnival outing with Rad and their Mini-Cons, Carlos devises a cover story claiming the Mini-Cons are advanced human-made robots to avoid suspicion, a plan complicated by the appearance of school bullies Billy and Fred.
Carlos faces peril, including capture by the Decepticon Cyclonus during an Autobot base attack and later being held hostage by Megatron, who demanded Mini-Cons for the humans' lives. He witnesses significant events like the discovery of Atlantis-like ruins, interacting there with a holographic figure named Amphitrite. Throughout the conflict, he evolves from initial skepticism to developing trust in Optimus Prime and the Autobot cause. His characteristic startled exclamation is "Holy frijoles!"
