Description
Optimus Prime, called Convoy in Japanese media, leads the Autobots in the Transformers: Armada continuity. Originating on Cybertron, he excelled as a prodigy at the Cybertronian Military Academy, earning its highest honors. Promoted to Field Commander before graduation, he witnessed the Decepticons destroying an Energon refinery and led a campaign that temporarily defeated them. This success secured his promotion to Autobot leader and Guardian of Cyber City. Millions of years earlier, he frequently battled the Decepticon warrior Scavenger. Their clashes developed mutual respect, leading Scavenger to join the Autobots and train Optimus in hand-to-hand combat and Metallikato.

When the Mini-Cons sought to leave Cybertron, hoping to take the war away, Optimus aided their escape aboard a spaceship. The war continued nonetheless. In 2010, a beacon from Earth alerted both factions to the Mini-Cons' reactivation. Optimus led a unit including Hot Shot and Red Alert to Earth via space bridge, leaving Jetfire in command on Cybertron. Upon arrival, he immediately confronted Megatron, prioritizing the protection of the human children Rad, Carlos, and Alexis, who befriended the Mini-Con High Wire.

Optimus established a policy of minimal human contact to avoid endangering Earth's inhabitants, a stance occasionally challenged by his team. He reunited with his former Mini-Con partner Sparkplug during a Grand Canyon mission, reactivating their Powerlinx connection to unleash the "Maximum Blast" against the Decepticons, a partnership central to his combat effectiveness. He consistently emphasized teamwork and mutual respect over individual power, notably during the creation of the Star Saber. When Megatron combined three Mini-Cons into the weapon, Optimus countered that true strength derived from cooperation, not control.

His leadership faced trials. He employed Scavenger as a spy within the Decepticon ranks, a decision causing initial Autobot distrust until Scavenger proved his loyalty. Optimus also held hope for redeeming Decepticons like Starscream. His compassion extended to Earth's environment, forbidding attacks during a forest fire to prevent ecological damage. In a pivotal act of self-sacrifice, he intercepted the Decepticons' Hydra Cannon blast aimed at Earth, using the Matrix of Leadership to halt the beam at the cost of his own life. The Mini-Cons later resurrected him through the Matrix's power, enabling his return in an enhanced Super Mode.

Optimus demonstrated significant combative versatility. His standard form transformed into a red and blue Freightliner-style truck, capable of storing up to six Mini-Cons in vehicle mode. Combining with his trailer accessed Super Mode, granting enhanced firepower despite limited articulation in toy depictions. Further combinations included:
- **Jet Prime/Jet Convoy**: Merging with Jetfire for aerial capabilities.
- **Optimus Prime Super Mode with Overload**: Adding shoulder-mounted cannons.
- **Three-way combination**: Integrating Jetfire and Overload simultaneously for maximum strength.
The trailer also transformed into a battle station featuring turrets and storage compartments for Mini-Cons, augmentable by Overload's cannon form.

Across the Unicron Trilogy, his character evolved. In Energon, he united Autobots, Decepticons, and humans to mine Energon, later gaining the Spark of Combination to merge with Wing Saber or Omega Supreme as Optimus Supreme. In Cybertron, he initially exhibited reluctance to interact with other cultures to avoid collateral damage. This changed when he recognized cooperation was essential to secure Cyber Planet Keys and save the universe from a black hole. His Dreamwave comics portrayal aligned with core traits, though some ancillary materials presented incompatible backstory details.
