Izumo Miyauchi serves as the keeper of a local Shinto shrine and discovers Shaorin's true identity as a supernatural guardian spirit. He nurtures romantic feelings for Shaorin and actively seeks opportunities to interact with her, leveraging his role managing the school store during school activities. His demeanor shifts dramatically: he presents a cheerful, charming facade around Shaorin and other females, but exhibits hostility and underhanded tactics toward male characters, especially Tasuke Shichiri, earning him a perception of dual personality.
Recognizing Shaorin's developing emotional attachment to Tasuke, Izumo deliberately twists her limited understanding of human emotions. He attempts to convince her that her feelings stem from guilt, positioning herself as a burden to Tasuke whom she should leave. This calculated manipulation extends to other methods aimed at undermining their bond, including efforts to physically separate them or sow discord, all driven by his persistent desire to redirect Shaorin's affections toward himself.
Facing family pressure for an arranged marriage to a relative, Izumo exploits the situation. He asks Shaorin to pose as his girlfriend, framing it as a solution to avoid the marriage while simultaneously advancing his own romantic pursuit. This illustrates his consistent willingness to exploit circumstances for personal gain. His actions persistently position him as an obstacle to the central relationship between Tasuke and Shaorin across the main series and its adaptations.
