Description
Rum grew up in Mirrorside Village, a top student alongside Patrick, Louise, and John, yet distinguished by crippling shyness that drove her to isolate herself. The day before the Shadows House selection, she dropped her circus ticket; John found it, encouraged her to participate despite her fears of being a burden, and returned it. At the circus, Rum encountered an orphan girl (later named Emilico) and helped her prepare for the selection, giving her clothing and a ribbon from her toy rabbit, Rummy. Rum kept this ribbon, tying it around her left index finger; it became her lifelong comfort object, a silent companion she spoke to for courage. Selected, Rum was brainwashed via soot-laced coffee and brought to the Shadows House as a Living Doll.
Assigned as the face and attendant to the Shadow Shirley, Rum's intense timidity prevented nearly all physical or verbal interaction with her master. This lack of contact hindered Shirley, a morph (a preliminary Shadow form approximately 7 cm tall resembling a tiny figure with short curly hair), from developing a distinct personality. Shirley wore a lavender dress, white hair accessories with lavender ribbons, and a matching ribbon on her left index finger. Their relationship remained strictly master-servant. During their Debut, Shirley struggled to maintain human form. After briefly holding Rum's hand in the garden labyrinth, Shirley disintegrated into soot. Shadows House authorities declared this a failure, citing Shirley's "weak life-force" exacerbated by the pair's prior lack of bonding.
Declared a failure, Rum was demoted to a "Faceless Doll." Shirley, however, survived in her small morph form and developed a lively, mischievous personality. She awakened soot powers enabling shape-shifting, often transforming into scorch marks or ribbons. By becoming a ribbon and tying herself around Rum's finger, they achieved telepathic communication, deepening their bond into one of mutual trust and close friendship. Rum carried Shirley during her duties, relying on her for reconnaissance; Shirley even suggested hiding in Rum's mouth to intercept brainwashing coffee. Shirley aided Kate's rebellion by scouting the mansion and sharing intelligence during nightly meetings. Collaborating with Rum, they relayed information via letters – a significant simplification compared to Shirley's earlier methods of interpretive dance or slow soot-based writing.
During the Kidnapping Arc, Shirley secretly followed Kate, discovered John disguised as a veiled doll, and guided him to rescue Emilico and Kate from Edward. After John exhausted his powers during the rescue, Shirley assisted him. Post-mission, she reunited with Rum, who was then serving as a veiled doll. Shirley's knowledge of mansion secrets, including the coffee brainwashing, became crucial to their covert activities.
Rum possessed exceptional spatial memory for maps and mental calculations. Shirley, in her morph form, could scale walls vertically and move rapidly. Their intertwined fates demonstrated silent partnership and resilience against the Shadows House's oppressive structures.
