TV-Series
Description
Shirley, a Shadow noble inhabiting the manor, first appears as a faceless black silhouette identical to her assigned Living Doll, Rum (also called Ram in early translations). She wears a lavender dress layered over a white undershirt and shorts, accented by a coordinating hairpiece and a unique purple ribbon fastened around her left index finger. Her featureless form emits soot under emotional distress, like other Shadows. Initial interactions with the intensely timid Rum are scarce, hindering Shirley's personality development before the Debut and leaving her emotionally immature and inexpressive without regular contact or the vital "goodnight kiss" ritual.
Rum hails from Mirrorside Village, where she excelled academically as a top student yet suffered from profound shyness and isolation. She has short, curly black hair, tan skin, and gray eyes, typically dressed in a Victorian maid uniform. Her sole comfort is a blue ribbon from her childhood toy rabbit, Rummy, which she ties around her finger and anthropomorphizes into "Lamy" to combat loneliness. Gifted with a photographic memory and exceptional calculation skills, Rum dreams of working in a dress workshop but joins the Shadows House selection after John returns her dropped circus ticket and encourages her.
During the Debut, Edward sabotages Shirley, trapping her beneath poisonous flowers in the garden labyrinth. Rum rescues her, initiating their first meaningful connection. Fleeing together, Shirley disintegrates into soot after briefly grasping Rum's hand, her incomplete personality and weak life force causing Debut failure. Rum is demoted to "Faceless Doll," and Edward confiscates and destroys her ribbon. Shirley later resurfaces as a sentient morph—a miniature, energetic form approximately 7 cm tall—still bearing her ribbon motif. She retrieves Rum's ribbon, fusing with it to become a sentient accessory on Rum's finger, enabling telepathic communication and forging a close partnership. Shirley employs her morph abilities to scout the mansion undetected, scale walls swiftly, and shapeshift into objects like scorches. She protects Rum from brainwashing by intercepting soot-laced coffee, hiding within Rum's mouth to consume the beverage.
Post-Debut, Shirley assists Kate's group by gathering intelligence, guiding John to rescue Emilico, and conveying information through interpretative dances or concise soot writing. Rum, now a Veiled Doll, supports the resistance by utilizing her memory and analytical skills to map the mansion and decode patterns. Their bond demonstrates mutual reliance: Shirley supplies emotional strength and stealth, while Rum provides tactical insight and physical presence. Shirley's evolution from a silent Shadow to a mischievous, protective ally highlights her resilience within the Shadows House's oppressive hierarchy.
