Description
Shinnosuke Otoi is a renowned robotics scientist specializing in humanoid robot development. He created Pulse, an advanced combat robot prototype, and later developed Signal. Signal incorporates experimental MIRA technology designed to grant regenerative properties and near-human lifelike qualities. Shinnosuke specifically designed Signal to act as a protective older brother figure and companion for his grandson, Nobuhiko, who lives with him while Nobuhiko's parents work abroad.
During Signal's activation sequence, Nobuhiko sneezed, inadvertently causing a significant programming glitch. This malfunction triggers Signal's involuntary transformation into a hyperactive, chocolate-obsessed child-sized version ("Chibi Signal") whenever Nobuhiko sneezes. Despite this flaw, Shinnosuke maintains responsibility for Signal's operational integrity and safety.
Shinnosuke works with his apprentice, Kris Sine, a self-proclaimed robotics engineer whose creations frequently malfunction or behave unpredictably. While he permits her involvement, he restricts her access to his laboratory due to concerns over her reliability and tendency toward overconfidence without sufficient technical rigor.
Shinnosuke shares a longstanding rivalry with Dr. Hoshimaro Umenokoji, a former academic peer who consistently ranked below him in competitions and academic performance. This rivalry escalated when Umenokoji orchestrated the theft of Pulse. Pulse had been taken overseas and weaponized by Shinnosuke's son, Masanobu, without authorization. Masanobu's unsanctioned modifications enhanced Pulse's combat capabilities but introduced severe drawbacks: extreme nearsightedness and chronic energy depletion. Umenokoji reprogrammed the stolen Pulse to attack Signal and steal the MIRA technology. Shinnosuke expresses frustration toward Masanobu for his irresponsible handling of Pulse, which directly enabled Umenokoji's sabotage.
Personality-wise, Shinnosuke exhibits a generally calm and good-natured demeanor, adapting to disruptions caused by Kris's antics or household chaos. However, he becomes visibly agitated when confronted by Masanobu's carelessness or Umenokoji's underhanded tactics. He demonstrates genuine concern for Nobuhiko's emotional well-being, initially worrying that Signal's programmed "big brother" personality might manifest as bullying. This concern lessened as Signal developed protective instincts toward Nobuhiko. Shinnosuke's approach combines scientific curiosity with familial duty, overseeing both his technological creations and his grandson's upbringing.
