Description
Valentina, the European Spanish dub name for Hikari Kamijou, is a junior high school student who discovers rhythmic gymnastics after witnessing Bulgarian champion Diliana Gueorguieva perform. Gueorguieva later invites her to train in Bulgaria. Initially insecure about her abilities, she joins her school's rhythmic gymnastics team and grapples with skill challenges.

Her athletic path merges with personal entanglements. She develops feelings for Takaaki Ooishi, a popular male gymnast at her school who mentors her and aids her progress. This complicates her relationship with rival Hazuki Shiina, the school’s top gymnast, who also harbors affection for Ooishi. Their rivalry transitions into mutual admiration—Hazuki epitomizes grace and elegance, while Valentina embodies energy and explosiveness in performances.

Childhood neighbor Mao Natsukawa, lead singer of a rock band, composes music for her routines, elevating her artistry. Mao gradually nurtures deep romantic feelings for her, though she remains unaware, preoccupied with Ooishi. Emotional turbulence from their bond impacts her gymnastics, causing performance fluctuations.

Her story concludes differently across media. The anime adaptation sees her winning Ooishi’s affection and becoming an Olympic champion, with a flashforward depicting her successful career as Hazuki retires to coach.

The manga diverges: after surpassing Hazuki and qualifying for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Valentina learns of Ooishi and Hazuki’s engagement. Devastated, she approaches Mao, who rebuffs her due to frustration over her prolonged unrequited feelings. This prompts her realization of her own affection for Mao. During her Olympic routine, Mao violates competition rules by singing an Italian love song live. Likely disqualified, they finish to audience applause, exit the arena together, and the story closes on her smiling at Mao, implying a romantic future.

Her design features distinctive wild hair symbolizing her energy, often tied in a tomboyish ponytail during athletics. She frequently wears pink in casual outfits and gymnastics leotards.
