Tonari Dalton debuted as a 14-year-old residing on Jananda Island, a penal colony she entered at age seven alongside her exiled father, Erran G. Dalton, convinced of his innocence regarding her mother's murder. Her faith shattered upon witnessing her father compete and perish in Jananda's gladiatorial tournament, forging her conviction that all island inhabitants were "murderous scum" deserving death. This trauma forged her pragmatic, manipulative nature and survivalist outlook.
Recruited by an unnamed individual to lure the immortal Fushi to Jananda with promises his victory could change the island, she initially exploited him for escape, enrolling him in the lethal tournament while downplaying the risks to his elderly companion, Pioran. Her cunning included withholding knowledge of Hayase's involvement and Pioran's imprisonment. During the tournament, observing Fushi's refusal to kill opponents and his grief over Parona's death shifted her perspective, especially after Fushi condemned her methods and invoked her past trust in her father. This prompted genuine cooperation: she aided Fushi against the parasitic Nokkers by organizing prisoners to use explosive arrows, teaching him the value of collective action.
When Hayase captured Fushi, Tonari secured escape for her friends and children but returned alone to free him. Departing Jananda, she confessed her disillusionment with her father and the island's morality. Fushi's reassurance helped her accept her past and aspire to rebuild Jananda's society.
Over forty years, Tonari aged to 54, developing immunity to toxins through repeated exposure, notably to venom from her owl, Ligard. She joined the Immortal Army to oppose the Nokkers, reuniting with Fushi during a resurgence of attacks. Centuries later, following Fushi's long slumber, she was among eleven spirits he resurrected in the modern era. She aided his fight against evolved Nokkers and counseled him on coexistence with humanity, later expressing weariness with eternal resurrection cycles.
Tonari demonstrated leadership, strategic intelligence, and medical knowledge, advising against removing spears from wounds. Her resilience was tempered by introspection, acknowledging her capacity for cruelty while striving to create systems enabling people to "change their own fates."
