Description
Chuta Ban, son of Ban Automotive Industry president Daizō Ban, achieved significant success in high school judo, securing three individual and three team national championships. Initially head of Seiun High's cheerleading squad and known as the "Demon Cheerleader," he frequently clashed with baseball team members, including Hyūma Hoshi, leveraging his father's status as a major school sponsor to bully Hyūma. Witnessing Hyūma's resilience during demanding training sessions, however, fostered mutual respect. This led Chūta to transfer from judo to baseball, forming a battery partnership with Hyūma as catcher.

His catching skills were initially underdeveloped, and his batting remained inconsistent, though he occasionally delivered powerful home runs using his judo-honed athleticism, providing crucial offensive points for Seiun High. During this period, his personality shifted from arrogance toward sportsmanship, though his father persistently interfered in his baseball career. After high school, both joined the Yomiuri Giants. Chūta started as the only catcher capable of handling Hyūma's specialized pitches like the "magic ball," but saw limited playing time behind the primary catcher, frequently moving between the first and second teams alongside Hyūma.

A pivotal moment occurred when Hyūma's father, Ittetsu Hoshi, orchestrated Chūta's trade to the Chunichi Dragons for a pitcher. The Giants initially resisted due to Chūta's knowledge of Hyūma's pitching secrets but eventually relented after deeming those pitches less invincible. Shocked by the trade and feeling he betrayed Hyūma, Chūta considered retirement. A conversation with Hyūma's sister, Akiko Hoshi, who referenced Jean Cocteau's advice—"In youth, don't buy safe stocks"—prompted him to accept the transfer. Under Ittetsu's training with the Dragons, Chūta's previously "rough" batting underwent significant refinement, reviving the powerful hitting he demonstrated in high school, despite Hyūma's earlier unsuccessful attempts to improve it during their Giants tenure.
