Description
Orphaned in post-war Japan and raised at Chibikko House orphanage, Naoto Date endured poverty and bullying before fleeing. Recruited by the criminal syndicate Tiger's Den, he was trained as a ruthless wrestler forced to surrender half his earnings. Adopting the persona "Yellow Devil," he fought viciously in American promotions, using illegal tactics to become a feared heel renowned for his animistic style.

A transformative moment occurred when Date visited his childhood orphanage in Japan. Hearing young Kenta idolize Yellow Devil’s villainy, he resolved to become a hero. He severed ties with Tiger's Den, halted their payments, and donated his wrestling income to orphanages. This defiance provoked Tiger's Den’s leaders to brand him a traitor and dispatch assassins—Black Tiger, Big Tiger, and King Tiger—to eliminate him.

Reborn as Tiger Mask, Date embraced a heroic identity marked by high-flying maneuvers and martial arts. His signature Tiger Suplex and Tiger Driver showcased agility and power. Despite wrestling honorably, he occasionally resorted to brutality against savage foes like Red Death Mask, fueling remorse over his violent past. Physically, he possessed near-superhuman strength, agility, and pain tolerance—subduing tigers and executing acrobatics. Mentally, he demonstrated match strategy and acute observation.

His story diverges across adaptations:
- In the manga, Date exposed a Yellow Devil impostor in Las Vegas, won a grueling tournament, then died saving a child from a truck. He discarded his mask into a river pre-death; his legacy continued as orphan Tatsuo Aku became Tiger Mask II.
- The original anime depicted Date defeating Tiger's Den leaders (King Tiger, Big Tiger, Black Tiger) with allies, sacrificing friend Daigo Daimon. After killing leader Tiger the Great, guilt drove him into exile abroad; his fate remained unresolved.
- The sequel *Tiger Mask W* referenced Date’s disappearance post-Tiger the Great. His mask inspired Naoto Azuma as the new Tiger Mask, mentored by Kentaro Takaoka (original Yellow Devil), while Date’s absence underscored his mythic legacy.

Across iterations, Date balanced moral complexity—torn between violent instincts and protecting the vulnerable. His bond with orphanage children, especially Kenta, anchored his heroism, though Tiger's Den’s shadow loomed perpetually. Visually, he wore an iconic tiger-head mask, black tights, and wrestling boots. Real-life wrestlers Satoru Sayama and Mitsuharu Misawa later embodied the persona, cementing its cultural legacy.
