Description
Gold Lightan is a sentient mechanical lifeform originating from the alternate Mecha Dimension. Deployed to Earth by the entity Mother Computer (or Big Eye), his mission is to counter the interdimensional conqueror King Ibalda (also known as Ivalda or Ibaruda). Upon arrival, Gold Lightan assumed the compact form of a golden Zippo-style lighter. Human child Hiro Taikai discovered this form, becoming Gold Lightan's primary ally and keeper. When activated, he transforms into a 30-meter-tall, 200-ton giant robot to confront extraterrestrial threats.
In combat, Gold Lightan wields immense physical strength and specialized offensive techniques. His signature maneuver is a penetrating hand strike targeting enemy core energy devices—often visualized as a "heartbox"—which he extracts and destroys to disable foes. His arsenal includes Tank Slice (Gold Chop), Battleship Breaker (a drop kick), Gold Quake (a ground shockwave), and Gold Press (a body slam command grab). He employs Tank Slice for projectile reflection and possesses super armor resilience. For prolonged engagements, he summons the allied Lightan Corps—sentient robots like Scope Lightan, Time Lightan, Denji Lightan, and Mechanic Lightan, who transform from everyday objects (scope, timer, compass, toolbox). These allies provide reconnaissance, time manipulation, repairs, and tactical support, capable of combining with Gold Lightan for enhanced assault configurations against larger adversaries.
Gold Lightan exhibits a protective and noble personality, articulating a clear mission to defend Earth and its inhabitants. He frequently voices ideals of friendship, perseverance, and moral responsibility, displaying empathy towards humans—particularly Hiro and his child allies, informally called the "Bratty Rangers" or "Brat Rangers." He shows reluctance to endanger civilians, voices remorse after combat, and sometimes encourages defeated adversaries to reform. Despite his robotic nature, he demonstrates autonomous decision-making, forming genuine bonds with Hiro's team and acting as a guardian. His interactions reveal respect for worthy opponents and adherence to a warrior's code.
Beyond the original 1981–1982 anime, Gold Lightan appears as a playable character in *Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars*. This adaptation retains his giant stature and anime-inspired moveset, including variations of Tank Slice, Battleship Breaker, and Gold Quake. His hyper combos feature Gold Crash (a seismic stomp) and Gold Finger Crash (a finishing grab). Gameplay emphasizes high damage output and projectile reflection, balanced by slow mobility and high recovery vulnerability. Classified by size as a solo fighter, he delivers unique win quotes against specific characters, such as commending Ryu's strength or acknowledging PTX-40A's tactical range.
Gold Lightan has been adapted into merchandise, including transformable figures replicating his robot and lighter forms. Notable releases are the Soul of Chogokin GX-32SP figure (approximately 5.1 inches tall) with interchangeable parts and the 24k gold-plated ES Gokin DX version (over 6 inches tall), both emphasizing screen-accurate detailing and transformation mechanics. The character has also been licensed for digital media expansions, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain-based gaming initiatives announced by Animoca Brands.
