Description
Emmanuel Wolfington Rat III, known as Manny Rat, serves as the narrative's primary antagonist. Initially encountered in a dump after the protagonists' abandonment, he poses as an eccentric entrepreneur offering shelter. This facade crumbles to expose his true enterprise: operating a sewer casino and commanding a rat gang that forces broken wind-up toys into slave labor, primarily for food service. His motivation stems from past rejection, fueling a desire to build an empire where enslaved toys cater to him.
Manny Rat rules his domain with authoritarian control, demanding absolute obedience. His cruelty manifests in acts like ordering the dismantling of a worn-out toy donkey to instill fear. Learning of his assistant Ralphie's death, which he blames on the protagonists' escape, intensifies his pursuit. This ignites a relentless vendetta, driving him to travel to the woods in a stolen toy car. There, he adopts deception, disguising himself as a beggar to infiltrate the squirrel bank and assaulting guards for entry.
His character deteriorates throughout the conflict. Public humiliation occurs during an experimental theater performance when woodland creatures boo him and pelt him with tomatoes after he quotes Shakespeare. Later, exhausted and isolated in the woods, he laments becoming a "laughingstock" at the dump and vows vengeance to reclaim his status. This obsession culminates in physical and mental decline; by spring, he appears emaciated and deranged. In a frenzied attack, he smashes the protagonists with a rock, pausing momentarily in horrified realization before fleeing.
Manny Rat expands his operations to a fortified dollhouse stronghold marked by an electric sign reading "We Love You, Manny." There, he forces enslaved toys into labor while hosting raucous parties for his rat minions. His downfall begins when confronted by the liberated protagonists and their allies. During the assault on his empire, he panics upon seeing a specific dog food can, fearing an earlier prophecy about his defeat. The rebellion destroys his headquarters: a thrown pendant shatters his teeth, and he is left dangling by his scarf before falling. Injured and deserted by his minions, he is stranded amid the ruins. In a final interaction, he receives the pendant that injured him, inscribed "You Will Succeed," leaving him alone to contemplate this message in fearful confusion.
His arc concludes differently across media. In the original narrative, a defeated Manny Rat experiences redemption, accepting an invitation to join the protagonist's family as an uncle. The animated adaptation concludes with him abandoned, toothless, and holding the pendant, his ultimate fate unresolved.
