Description
Enma-kun, nephew of Hell's ruler Enma-Daio, is a fire-based demon. His core mission commands the Yokai Patrol to capture or eliminate demons escaping Hell into the human world. This role spans multiple narrative iterations with distinct tones and character dynamics across adaptations.

In the original 1973 manga and anime, he operates with a team: Yukiko-Hime, a Yuki-onna princess wielding ice powers; Kapaeru, a half-kappa water sprite; and Chapeauji, a sentient hat guide. Enma-kun wields the Burning Akuma Power Pole, a staff emitting hellfire that transforms into weapons, and the Yokai Cloak, a magical cape shape-shifting into nets, whips, or barriers. His abilities include flight, teleportation, x-ray vision, hurricane-force shouts, resurrection at a mana cost, and extrasensory perception via his elongated eyebrows to detect demonic presence. An impulsive and perverted personality often leads to comedic situations, particularly involving unwanted advances toward Yukiko-Hime. Despite this, he shows genuine concern for teammates and human allies Tsutomu and Harumi.

The 2006 OVA *Demon Prince Enma* reimagines the character in a darker horror setting. He leads a mature Yokai Patrol disguised as a detective agency. Core abilities remain, but the narrative emphasizes suspense and moral ambiguity. Retaining his brash demeanor, this version explores his professionalism confronting psychologically intense threats like demons exploiting human suffering. His relationship with Yukiko-Hime (renamed Yukihime) is strained but marked by unspoken mutual affection, complicated by opposing elemental natures.

The 2011 series *Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up* returns to comedic and ecchi elements, reintroducing original manga concepts with modern updates. Enma-kun’s perversity and fiery temper stay central, while his role expands to address conflicts involving Heaven and Hell’s bureaucratic decisions, such as harvesting human souls. This iteration adds Enpi-chan—a gender-flipped parody character from a 2000 spin-off—as his sister, creating new dynamics. Powers receive visual updates, including a giant mallet attack reminiscent of other anime. The series highlights his vulnerability when Yukiko-Hime is endangered.

Across all media, consistent elements define Enma-kun: his lineage as Hell’s prince, fire-based powers, reliance on the Yokai Patrol, and abrasive yet protective nature. His development shifts from lighthearted adventure to psychological horror and back, adapting core traits to each genre while maintaining his role as a flawed but dedicated guardian against supernatural threats.
