Alois Cogez, daughter of the wealthiest village landowner Baas Cogez, nurtures a deep bond of trust and affection with her impoverished friend Nello, defying her father's strong disapproval rooted in class differences. Kind-hearted and innocent, she appears in traditional Flemish attire, including a white sling and apron.

Her father enforces social boundaries by sending her to an English boarding school, where she falls seriously ill. Returning home weakened, her recovery is aided by Nello's emotional support; his drawings of their shared memories uplift her spirits. Alois actively champions Nello's artistic talent, frequently requesting his work and admiring his ambition.

She confronts her father about his harsh treatment of Nello, especially after Nello faces a false arson accusation. Her persistent advocacy and moral courage gradually soften her father's stance, leading to a reconciliation between the family and Nello.

In later life, following Nello's death, she becomes a nun, reflecting on their past and maintaining a spiritual and emotional connection. Her influence transforms her family's rigid attitudes, bridging the social divide that once separated them from Nello.
