Description
Haran Banjou's origins lie in a Martian tragedy where his father, scientist Sōzō Haran, created the self-aware Meganoid cyborgs who rebelled, killing most of his family. At sixteen, Banjou escaped to Earth aboard a rocket carrying Daitarn 3, a solar-powered super robot built from Martian metals. By eighteen, he resided in an Earth mansion, committed to fighting the Meganoid threat. While officially eighteen, his history as an adventurer, university attendance, and prior Interpol work suggest an older age, potentially explained by Mars's longer orbital cycle relative to Earth's.

Banjou exhibits confidence, determination, and a suave demeanor. He possesses a "Casanova" streak, frequently flirting, yet maintains ruthless focus against the Meganoids. Adhering to a moral code, he spares Meganoids showing honor or capacity for love and offers adversaries chances to surrender. His resolve is captured in recurring phrases like "The Sun Ring is within my grasp," summoning Daitarn 3 with "DAITAAA~RN...COME HERE!", and declaring attacks like "SUN! ATTACK!". Strategic foresight is evident, such as carrying platinum strips to counter Meganoid brainwashing toxins. This blend of charm and aggression reflects an ethos of self-reliance and justice.

Key relationships define his life. His core team includes Garrison Tokida, his loyal butler and tactical supporter; Reika Sanjō, an ex-Interpol agent handling field repairs and combat; and Beautiful "Beauty" Tachibana, a childhood friend providing technical and emotional support. Toppo, a young orphan rescued early on, stays as comic relief and a skilled marksman. Banjou's romantic history involves Yukari Miyamura, a former O.S.C.A.T. leader and his first love. Their secret relationship deteriorated under work pressures and his infidelities, culminating in her kidnapping, brainwashing by the antagonist "Trainer X," and transformation into a Meganoid, met with Banjou's visible grief. Family connections include his half-sister Ai Fujisaki and stepmother Miwako Sawamoto, his legal guardian on Earth. He respects Miwako but struggles to see her as a mother, maintaining a casual dynamic despite her professional authority.

Piloting Daitarn 3, Banjou wields a diverse arsenal of solar-powered weapons. Primary attacks include the Sun Attack, often followed by the Daitarn Crash flying kick, and the Sun Attack Scattershot for widespread damage. Defensive and auxiliary tools range from the Daitarn Fan energy shields to Daitarn Zanber swords and the Great Star boomerang. Daitarn 3 transforms into the Daifighter aircraft and Daitank ground vehicle. Banjou independently funds operations with inherited wealth, deploying customized vehicles like the Mach Patrol, which converts into the Mach Attacker plane equipped with blades and mines. His tactical ingenuity extends beyond mecha combat, incorporating espionage, martial arts, and improvised strategies against Meganoid commanders.

Banjou's story evolves from episodic confrontations with distinct Meganoid commanders and their "Megaborgs" to a conclusive arc. The plot intensifies as Koros, Don Zauser's second-in-command, reveals motivations tied to twisted love before her defeat. In the finale, Banjou confronts Don Zauser on Mars, achieving victory at personal cost, embodying a "He Who Fights Monsters" theme. The conclusion depicts his team disbanding, members departing for separate lives while he remains alone at his mansion. Spin-off novels, the Banjō Haran Series, explore his legacy beyond the anime. An unresolved theory persists across media regarding Banjou's potential status as a Meganoid hybrid, hinted but never confirmed. His iconic visual identity features turquoise hair, blue eyes, and a muscular build.
