Description
Terence "Terry" Drake, born Tadashi Daiba, is the son of scientist Tsuyoshi Daiba (Professor Drake). His mother perished during a Triton disaster after Earth's government ignored distress calls. Following his father's murder by the Mazone alien race, who targeted research exposing their invasion plans, Tadashi became orphaned and sought refuge aboard Captain Harlock's starship Arcadia.
Initially an audience surrogate, his perspective introduces the Arcadia's operations and crew dynamics. He struggles with adaptation to the ship's environment, where crew members display eccentric off-duty behavior but disciplined combat efficiency, causing initial dismay before gradual acceptance. Early on, he frequently clashes with Harlock and proves vulnerable to Mazone manipulation; they exploit his naivety for infiltration and sabotage attempts against the Arcadia.
He evolves from an impulsive outsider into a trusted senior officer, specializing as a pilot. His relationship with navigator Kei Yuki begins contentiously but develops into a close platonic bond; some adaptations imply romantic undertones, while others depict unrequited feelings from Kei toward Harlock. His primary motivation remains opposing the Mazone for destroying his family and protecting Earth's apathetic populace.
Beyond the original 1978 series, the character appears in the OVA *Endless Odyssey* (2002), rejoining Harlock's crew after Earth's disappearance to battle the ancient entity Noo. He also features in the 2019 manga *Capitaine Albator – Mémoires de l’Arcadia* (localized as *Space Pirate Captain Harlock*), which inserts a new storyline within the original series' timeline. Here, he participates in missions investigating a newly discovered Arctic Mazone subspecies causing planetary freezing and parallel-dimensional threats.
