Description
Lafresia reigns as the absolute monarch of the Mazon, a plant-based alien species whose homeworld perished when their sun exploded. She commands her people aboard a caravan of ships in a desperate search for a new home, ultimately selecting Earth due to ancient historical ties. Mazon records confirm their distant past presence in Earth's solar system, where they transplanted Venusian lifeforms and nurtured early humans, intending to eventually treat them as domestic livestock upon their return.

Initially portrayed as a wise and benevolent ruler committed to her species' survival, Lafresia's recurring failures to establish colonies—frequently resulting in planetary devastation—steadily corroded her morality. This deterioration drove her to embrace progressively ruthless and desperate tactics as the conflict unfolded. Her appearance embodies the standard Leiji Matsumoto archetype: tall and willowy, with pale skin, narrow eyes, and long, flowing dark blue hair. She customarily wears a long black dress featuring a distinctive heart-shaped cutout spanning from shoulders to abdomen, paired with a crown bearing a central forehead jewel that branches into three congruent sections. She dons a form-fitting magenta and green combat outfit during battle.

Lafresia wields absolute authority over the entire Mazon fleet and military forces. Her technological arsenal incorporates advanced projection devices, including a crystal ball enabling interstellar communication via 3D imaging, and a sword proficient in both close combat and energy-based beam attacks akin to a Gravity Saber. Early engagements with Captain Harlock saw her dismiss him as a minor threat; she once even saved his life to provide her military with a focal adversary—a choice she later came to regret. As Harlock's resistance intensified, however, her fixation on understanding and defeating him deepened, culminating in tactics she once considered dishonorable. This included authorizing the kidnapping of Mayu Oyama (Harlock's morality pet and daughter of his closest friend) to lure him into a trap. Such actions, combined with her willingness to sacrifice civilian ships during combat, fueled dissent within both the Mazon populace and military leadership.

Her character confronts a pivotal moment during a final duel with Harlock, where he uncovers her true nature: despite leading the Mazon, Lafresia is biologically human. This revelation, though not fully explained within the original series, adds complexity to her motivations. Defeated in combat, Harlock grants her clemency, permitting her and surviving Mazon civilians to depart Earth to seek another homeworld. True to her embittered resolve, Lafresia attempts a final act of spite by triggering Earth's destruction as they leave, though this effort is thwarted.

Her name, "Lafresia" (also spelled Rafflesia), originates from a Southeast Asian parasitic flower nicknamed the "corpse flower" for its odor resembling rotting flesh. This etymology mirrors her leadership approach: conquering planets to sustain her people while draining resources vital to native species, inevitably leaving barren worlds behind. Despite widespread rumors, narrative sources definitively state she never harbored romantic feelings for Harlock; her focus remained exclusively on her mission, and she ultimately cursed him for destroying her people's future.
