Description
Reina Raflexia stands as the primary adversary opposing Captain Harlock and his crew throughout multiple franchise installments. Ruler of the Mazon Empire, her core motivation drives her to secure a new homeworld for her people after the destruction of their original planet. The Mazon are organic, plant-based aliens who explored Earth in ancient times before returning to reclaim it.

Physically, Raflexia embodies the standard female design aesthetic of her creator's universe: tall and willowy, with long flowing blue hair, pale skin, and distinctive narrow eyes. Her primary attire is an elegant black dress featuring open shoulders and a heart-shaped cut extending to the abdomen, complemented by a crown with three congruent parts surrounding her head. She switches to a form-fitting magenta and green battle uniform for combat.

Leadership burdens profoundly transformed her personality. Originally a wise and compassionate ruler, repeated failures to establish new colonies—which resulted in planetary desolation—hardened her worldview. She cultivated particular disdain for worlds governed by apathetic or ineffective leaders, notably Earth's authorities. This cynicism justified increasingly ruthless tactics against native populations during invasions.

Despite her antagonistic role, Raflexia maintains a complex relationship with Harlock, devoid of personal hatred. She demonstrates respect through direct confrontations, including personal meetings to discuss their conflicting objectives. Her commitment to Mazon survival supersedes ethical boundaries, evident when she sanctioned the kidnapping of Mayu Ōyama as leverage against Harlock—an act she acknowledged as dishonorable yet necessary.

A pivotal revelation occurs during her final duel with Harlock, where he discovers her true identity as human, not Mazon. This disclosure reframes her relentless drive for conquest as an existential burden rather than inherent alien aggression. Following her defeat, Harlock permits her and the remaining Mazon forces to depart Earth peacefully.

Her capabilities extend beyond political authority to technological and combat proficiency. She commands advanced Mazon warships and projection-based communication systems resembling crystal balls. In personal combat, she wields a specialized sword capable of both melee engagement and energy beam projection, functionally similar to Harlock's gravity saber.

Her name derives from Rafflesia, a parasitic Southeast Asian flower lacking roots or leaves that survives by draining host organisms. This parallels her narrative role: conquering planets to sustain the Mazon while depleting native resources. The flower's alternative name, "corpse flower," references its odor resembling rotting flesh—symbolizing the devastation left by her campaigns.
