Gel Sadra emerges as the primary antagonist in Gatchaman II, appointed as the new commander of the terrorist group Galactor following Berg Katse. Genetically modified with an intersex condition, Gel Sadra displays an intentionally ambiguous gender presentation that varies across adaptations.
Originally the child Sammie Pandora, born to scientists Dr. Sylvie Pandora and Domenico Pandora, they survived a meteor attack by Leader X that sank the cruise ship Queen Margaret (or Elizabeth Moore) at age 3-4. Leader X abducted Sammie, subjecting them to accelerated aging and genetic mutation, forcibly maturing them into a 25-year-old adult to command Galactor. This process left Gel Sadra physically adult but emotionally unstable, prone to childish tantrums during setbacks.
Gel Sadra's androgynous appearance is typically hidden beneath a distinctive uniform: a purple tunic with oversized bell sleeves, a protruding blue collar, tight blue pants, long white gloves, high black boots, and a clownish headdress obscuring their eyes behind lens-covered goggles. Their visible features include pale white facial skin, pink lipstick, and sometimes blackened teeth (ohaguro-style). When unmasked, their features shift between traditionally masculine and feminine presentations depending on context, such as wearing a suit for disguise or a dress during significant encounters.
Their personality exhibits intense hatred for predecessor Katse, mocking his legacy and destroying his portraits. Gel Sadra employs flamboyant speech patterns and signature phrases like "Failure is the mother of success," "Albatross flying into the fire," and the curse "Onore, onore, Gatchaman!" (localized as "Curse you, Gatchaman!"). Their leadership mirrors Katse’s, abandoning subordinates to die during missions.
Throughout Gatchaman II, Gel Sadra spearheads Galactor's resurgence under Leader X, displaying strategic cunning by rebuilding the organization and abducting scientists within a month. Their arc culminates dramatically upon encountering Dr. Pandora, who initially fails to recognize them as her child. After Leader X executes Dr. Pandora via rocket explosion, Gel Sadra experiences a moral awakening, defects from Galactor, and aids the Gatchaman team in locating X's stronghold.
Mortally wounded during the assault on X's base, Gel Sadra stumbles into a flower-filled field, expresses remorse for their actions, and wishes for rebirth as Earth's protector. As life fades, their body reverts to the child Sammie while a vision of Dr. Pandora reassures them. Their remaining clothing dissipates in the wind, symbolizing release from suffering.
International adaptations vary: Hong Kong depicts Gel Sadra as female; Taiwan treats child Sammie as male (Jiāmíng) and the adult as ambiguously gendered; French media describes them as "neither man nor woman." South Korea's Eagle 5 Brothers film reimagines the origin, portraying Gel Sadra as unambiguously male (Marco) who dies avenging his mother. The U.S. Eagle Riders dub (as Mallanox) introduces convoluted retcons, initially presenting them as male before revealing a brainwashed female abductee.
A separate character, Gelsadora, appears in Gatchaman Crowds insight as an unrelated pacifist alien who crash-lands on Earth and bonds with protagonist Tsubasa Misudachi, sharing only the name's spelling without narrative connections to the original Gel Sadra.
