Ryuu Jusetsu reigns as the Raven Consort and Winter King within Yamei Palace, deep inside the imperial inner palace. Her striking appearance features pale skin, a slender frame, and long black hair styled in two loops secured by jade and gold ornaments, matched by dangling jade and gold earrings. Two large pink peonies, manifestations of her magic, crown her hair. Her large dark eyes resemble black agate, accentuated by distinctive pink eyeshadow, red eyeliner, and lipstick. She wears exclusively black garments, including a satin outer robe embroidered with floral and avian motifs and a black silk shawl. A dark red osmanthus-shaped burn scar marks her left wrist, a relic of past enslavement. Her natural silver hair, inherited from her maternal lineage, is actively concealed with dye.
Her personality blends aloofness with a fierce sense of justice. Isolation within Yamei Palace fosters her mysterious aura and old-fashioned speech, often perceived as arrogant. She exhibits bluntness and impatience, refusing to defer to authority and preferring direct action. Despite her stern exterior, she shows compassion for the distressed and vehemently opposes spirit mistreatment. Deep-seated guilt over her mother's death creates an internal void partially filled by her predecessor, Reijou. Vulnerabilities include moments of fluster when her aloof facade cracks and an inability to resist food-based bribes, especially baozi.
Jusetsu's origins lie in tragedy. Born to a prostitute mother from the persecuted Ran (Luan) clan and an unknown father, she fled palace soldiers with her mother at age four. Her mother concealed her and confronted the soldiers alone, leading to capture and public execution. Jusetsu witnessed her mother's decapitated head, triggering severe psychological trauma. Enslaved and branded by the You family, she endured two years of servitude before a golden arrow—a transformed feather from a mystical bird—signaled her selection as the next Raven Consort. A eunuch then brought her to Yamei Palace.
Under Reijou's guidance, Jusetsu received protection and education. Reijou dyed her silver hair black to hide her lineage, taught her reading, writing, and the Raven Consort's mystical arts, and imparted her antiquated speech patterns. Though Reijou's nurturing provided stability, Jusetsu retained a lingering sense of incompleteness. She assumed the role of Raven Consort following Reijou's death, two years before Emperor Ka Koushun's ascension.
Her development unfolds through interactions beyond Yamei Palace. Initially resistant to Emperor Koushun's requests, she reluctantly assists him in investigating a ghost tied to a jade earring. This necessitates her first venture outside the palace in disguise, where she intervenes to protect the kitchen maid Jiujiu from bullying, forming a bond. Her investigations uncover palace secrets, including the extermination of the previous imperial family—her own ancestors—by Koushun's grandfather. Her concealed identity is jeopardized when Koushun and his attendant Ei Sei discover her silver hair during redyeing. Instead of exposure, Koushun safeguards her secret and returns her dyeing bowl, signaling trust. This pivotal moment allows Jusetsu to gradually accept support, appointing Jiujiu as her attendant and later welcoming allies like the eunuch Wen Ying. These relationships mark her transition from isolation to meaningful connection, challenging the Raven Consort's traditional destiny of solitude.
As the last heir of the Ran/Luan clan, she grapples with survivor's guilt and the burden of her heritage. Her magic involves summoning spirits, exorcising ghosts, and performing curses, often channeled through fluttering flower petals. Despite the emotional weight of her duties and past, her journey reflects a gradual reconciliation with her identity and the acceptance of companionship.
