Description
Kappei Jin pilots the combining mecha Zambot 3 as its central protagonist. A 12-year-old descendant of survivors from the destroyed planet Beal, his family settled on Earth around 150 years earlier to prepare for the inevitable invasion by the entity Gaizok. They developed three vehicles—Zambo Ace, Zambull, and Zambase—that combine into Zambot 3. Kappei specifically operates the Zambird, which transforms into the Zambo Ace, controlling Zambot 3's primary functions after combination.

He begins as an impulsive, selfish, and confrontational youth, displaying reckless behavior like refusing to combine the mecha during critical moments and performing dangerous stunts unrelated to fighting. Highly athletic and skilled in martial arts, he frequently clashes with his rival, Shingo Kōzuki. This immaturity strains his relationships with civilians and family.

Kappei undergoes significant development fueled by the trauma of Gaizok's attacks and intense societal rejection. Earth's populace blames the Jin family for attracting Gaizok, leading to ostracization and sabotage of their efforts. Witnessing extensive collateral damage and civilian casualties during battles forces him to confront the consequences of his protector role. His motivations shift from seeking excitement to a genuine desire for Earth's safety, crystallized in his declaration: "I fight to protect Earth! Earth's our world! We HAVE to keep it safe!"

His combat capabilities originate from six months of sleep-learning hypnosis, granting him unparalleled reflexes and piloting skills while suppressing his ability to feel fear. This training makes him the only individual capable of effectively operating Zambot 3, outperforming trained military personnel. Despite his prowess, Kappei faces severe emotional challenges as Gaizok employs tactics like implanting bombs in civilians, resulting in the deaths of his friends Hamamoto and Kenta. These losses, combined with persistent public condemnation, erode his initial brashness, fostering a more jaded and resolute outlook.

The final battle brings near-total devastation to the Jin family. Kappei's cousins and co-pilots, Uchūta Kamie (15) and Keiko Kamikita (14), perish in a suicide attack. His robotic dog, Chiyonishiki, is destroyed. Most of his extended family, including his father Gengoroh, die enabling his escape. Kappei emerges as the sole survivor of the Zambot 3 team and one of the few remaining Jin family members. In the aftermath, civilians finally acknowledge his sacrifices, cheering him as a hero.
