Description
Jam Ojisan, also known as Uncle Jam or Mr. Jam, is the elderly baker living in a bread factory within the Anpanman universe. His appearance echoes Anpanman, with gray hair, fluffy eyebrows, a mustache, and lighter red cheeks and nose. He typically wears a white chef's hat, shirt, pants, apron, and bluish-gray shoes.

He unintentionally created Anpanman when a shooting star, called a "star of life" in some versions, landed in his oven while he baked an anpan. This event gave the pastry life, birthing Anpanman as an infant whom Jam Ojisan then raised and mentored. He is also the creator of Melonpanna and Rollpanna, while early media suggested he created Currypanman before this was retconned.

Jam Ojisan possesses vast knowledge and diverse skills gained through youthful travels, reflected in his large book collection. He is an expert baker, skillfully crafting bread heads to restore strength for Anpanman and others. He is also a proficient inventor and mechanic, designing and maintaining mecha machines like the Anpanman Mobile defense vehicle. His capabilities include motorcycle riding and potentially other undisclosed talents.

His personality radiates profound kindness, warmth, and a commitment to helping others. He embodies paternal care, especially towards Anpanman, whom he raised like a son, encouraging him to pursue justice and aid those in need. This nurturing extends to others: he acts as a father figure to Melonpanna, supports Creampanda as an adoptive child, and maintains a deeply familial, cooperative bond with Batako-san, his bakery assistant. He repeatedly invites the troubled Rollpanna to join the bakery family, showing persistent concern for her well-being.

Within the Anpanman world's lore, Jam Ojisan and Batako-san are identified as fairies, as no humans exist. His early depictions in the 1973 picture book omitted his name, referring to him generically as "uncle" or "old man." An initial concept depicted him smoking a pipe, abandoned in all subsequent media.

His role is foundational to Anpanman's heroism. By baking replacement heads, he enables Anpanman’s self-sacrificial acts of feeding the hungry and combating threats. This dynamic underscores a core theme of interdependence—Anpanman’s ability to protect others relies entirely on Jam Ojisan’s sustenance and mechanical support, reflecting creator Takashi Yanase’s wartime experiences with starvation and emphasizing community and mutual reliance as antidotes to scarcity and conflict.
