Description
Cardinal Richelieu stands as the primary political antagonist, serving as Prime Minister to King Louis XIII. He relentlessly pursues the consolidation of power and influence, frequently executing schemes against Queen Anne of Austria, driven by resentment over her rejection of his advances. He orchestrates plots to discredit her, including fabricating scandals about her relationship with the Duke of Buckingham, aiming to incite war between England and France.

He commands a network of loyal agents, chiefly Milady de Winter and Captain Rochefort. Milady acts as his primary operative, employing espionage and animal manipulation via a special whistle to advance his agendas. Rochefort leads the Cardinal’s Guards, functioning as both enforcer and comic foil against the Musketeers. Richelieu’s dependence on these subordinates highlights his preference for indirect manipulation over direct action.

Visually, Richelieu appears in stark black clerical attire, a deliberate deviation from traditional cardinal red. His design features a pointed beard, a common stylistic element not exclusive to villainy, reinforcing his austere and imposing presence.

Despite employing ruthless methods—imprisonment, espionage, and assassination attempts—Richelieu adheres to a strict code of loyalty to France and King Louis XIII. He explicitly rejects overthrowing the monarchy, seeking only to guide the king’s decisions. This loyalty proves pivotal during the Iron Mask arc, where imprisonment for corruption follows the king's replacement by a twin. In a rare alliance, he collaborates with the Musketeers to expose the impostor and save the real king, physically combating guards during a jailbreak. His forces later join the Musketeers in a unified assault against the Iron Mask faction, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the crown.

Richelieu’s character remains defined by pragmatism: though self-serving, he prioritizes national stability under the rightful monarch. His adaptability in forming temporary alliances against greater threats underscores his political acumen.
