Description
Yutaka Matsuno is a high school student from Kochi, sporting brown hair and dark eyes, typically dressed in a white shirt, red tie, and black trousers. His personality blends seriousness and maturity in addressing situations and concerns, balanced by a sense of humor that deepens his friendships. He acts bravely and is open about his feelings, especially romantic ones, readily discussing them if asked.
As Taku Morisaki's close friend, Yutaka first introduces him to Rikako Muto, a transfer student from Tokyo. Despite Rikako's initial arrogance and ensuing conflicts within their group, Yutaka develops feelings for her and confesses. Facing rejection, he maintains outward composure while wrestling internally. A significant rift occurs when Yutaka witnesses Rikako crying after an argument with Taku. Interpreting Taku's reluctance to pursue Rikako as self-sacrifice to avoid hurting him, Yutaka punches Taku. This act stems from frustration that Taku consistently prioritizes Yutaka’s convenience and happiness over his own, leading to a prolonged estrangement that silences communication among all three friends.
Years later, after high school and into university, Yutaka attends a class reunion and reunites with Taku. During a private moment overlooking the ocean, he explains the true reason for his past outburst: he valued Taku’s potential for happiness and was angered that Taku suppressed his feelings for Rikako out of loyalty to their friendship. This reconciliation renews their bond, highlighting Yutaka’s enduring care for Taku’s well-being despite the passage of time and past conflicts.
His name reflects symbolic elements: "Yutaka" means "abundant" or "plentiful," while "Matsuno" combines "pine tree" or "fir tree" (松) with "field" or "wilderness" (野).
