Description
Kyosuke Tamamo is a powerful fox spirit (yōkai) initially appearing as an antagonist determined to acquire Hiroshi Tateno's skull, a "perfect match" essential for completing his human transformation. Following a decisive defeat by Meisuke Nueno protecting Hiroshi, Tamamo survives and redirects his focus. He becomes intensely curious about human emotions, specifically the "love" that amplified Nube's power during their confrontation. This curiosity compels him to abandon hostility and adopt a human disguise. He first poses as a teacher intern, later becoming a surgeon at Doumori Hospital, applying centuries of accumulated knowledge to heal humans.
His true form is that of a tall, fox-like beast adorned with a green mantle, though he typically manifests as a long-haired human male wearing a bandana. His current human guise relies on the skull of the deceased mountain climber Akihiko Nagumo. Prolonged use without a "perfect" replacement risks the gradual erosion of his mental and physical faculties. A pivotal development occurs when he encounters Nagumo's fiancée, forcing him to confront the emotional weight of his actions and the human connections he previously dismissed.
Originally viewing humans as "dirty creatures," Tamamo evolves into a protective figure through repeated collaborations with Nube and Class 5-3. He demonstrates this shift by deploying "Megido," a self-sacrificial fire-based technique, to destroy the destructive entity Zekki and save humans. His attachment deepens significantly, leading him to forfeit opportunities to claim Hiroshi's skull, recognizing he can no longer harm those he has grown to value.
Tamamo wields extensive spiritual abilities honed over centuries. He specializes in "illusion jutsu," crafting lifelike deceptions including video game screen clones, and "yōko foxfire jutsu," generating and manipulating potent flames. His primary weapon, a claw-like neck catcher, extracts skulls but can also fragment into a barrier for confined combat. Despite his power, he remains dependent on human skulls to maintain his form and abilities.
His relationship with Nube transitions from rivalry to a reluctant alliance. While Tamamo publicly frames his study of human emotions as a means to surpass Nube, he privately develops respect and admiration, avoiding direct confrontation and repeatedly aiding him. He also forms complex ties: Hiroshi shifts from a target to someone he protects; Izuna Hazuki, initially perceived as a threat, earns his restraint due to her compassion for children.
In later narratives like *Jigoku Sensei Nube Neo*, Tamamo operates distantly but supportively. He declines Nube's request for aid against Dai Satsuki Tentei to tend to an injured Golden Nine-Tail Kitsune, expressing unwavering confidence in Nube's capability to prevail alone. He later acknowledges Nube's success in safeguarding the world with relief. Folklore suggests a potential link to the legendary Nine-Tailed Kitsune Tamamo-no-Mae, treated as an allusion rather than direct lineage within the series.
