TV-Series
Description
Meisuke Nueno, commonly called Nube, was born with uncontrollable spiritual abilities that caused frequent possessions by evil spirits and relentless bullying in his youth. His teacher Minako saved him by sacrificing herself to exorcise a powerful snake ghost within him, an event that deeply affected him and inspired his path to becoming a teacher dedicated to protecting children from supernatural threats.
After earning his teaching license, he started working at Domori Elementary School. On his first day, he confronted a student possessed by a demon. To exorcise it, he sealed the demon—along with the lingering essence of Minako’s soul—into his own left hand. This act forced the abandonment of the affected classroom and led him to perpetually conceal the hand beneath a black glove.
He serves as homeroom teacher for class 5-3. Initially seen by his students as bumbling and comical, he gradually earns their respect through demonstrations of sincere dedication and supernatural skill. His teaching and conduct are guided by a powerful sense of responsibility for his students' safety and well-being, often placing himself at great personal risk to shield them.
His personality merges cheerful lightheartedness with serious professionalism. Outside school, he displays financial carelessness, a love for pachinko gambling, and a tendency to pursue romantic interests, especially with colleague Ritsuko Takahashi. He adheres to a chivalrous code, never behaving inappropriately toward students or much younger women. Though generally kind, a confrontation with the Golden Nine-Tail Kitsune revealed a darker side—an illusion exposed deep jealousy and a potential for violence, hinting at hidden complexity.
His primary supernatural power comes from the Oni no Te (Demon Hand), an oni sealed within his left hand. The hand appears deformed, with long black nails, and holds immense power. He uses it to exorcise spirits, typically accessing only a fraction of its full strength to avoid being overtaken. He also employs spiritual tools like the Sutra Book of the White-Robed Goddess for sealing youkai, a crystal ball to reveal spirits, and prayer beads for attack and summoning. He has mastered techniques such as creating a separate spiritual body (youshin jutsu) and spirit projection.
His relationships are integral to his life. He shares strong bonds with his students, particularly Hiroshi Tateno, whom he saved from possession, and Kyoko Inaba, a neighbor since college. Romantically, he is caught between Ritsuko Takahashi, a fellow teacher initially fearful of the supernatural, and Yukime, a yuki-onna he rescued. He eventually declines Ritsuko’s affections, commits to Yukime, marries her, and later moves with her to Kyushuu. Other key allies include the reformed fox spirit Kyosuke Tamamo and his master Otengu.
A major conflict arises when Zekki, brother of the sealed oni, attacks him and his friends to free the demon and unleash chaos. Nearly killed in the battle, he ultimately defeats Zekki by casting him into hell. He is later healed by mermaid Hayame’s blood, though the process causes temporary intellectual decline in everyone involved.
Twelve years after the original events, he returns to Domori Elementary in response to renewed youkai activity, as seen in "Jigoku Sensei Nube Neo." He resumes his protective role, now aided by a grown-up Kyoko Inaba, who has become a teacher.
In the alternate timeline of "Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension," he gives his life shielding children and Izuna from Byakko’s judgment. When Izuna travels back in time to save him, he cautions her against changing the past to avoid losing her future companions. In the revised timeline where he survives, he relives the original storyline and eventually retires to Kyushuu with Yukime. He is later summoned back to Tokyo to assist with a youkai incident, resulting in a temporary misunderstanding with Yukime that is later mended.
His background is marked by hardship. His mother died of illness because the family could not afford treatment, despite his father—an exorcist—having generously aided others who later refused to help in return. This betrayal led his father to abandon him and seek wealth and power, becoming a corrupt exorcist. This history of loss and abandonment shaped his values, driving him to selflessly aid others and reject using his powers for monetary gain, leaving him in persistent poverty.
