Description
Mei-Ling, also called Lin-Lin in Japanese Darkstalkers 3 releases and Rin-Rin in manga, is the older twin sister of Hsien-Ko. Born in 1730s China to a lineage of powerful mystics known as Senjutsushis, their village was attacked by undead spirits. Their mother sacrificed her life protecting them and the village while teaching the twins a reincarnation spell. Trapped in darkness after death, their mother's soul prompted Mei-Ling and Hsien-Ko to use the forbidden Igyo Tenshin-no-Jutsu. This transformed Hsien-Ko into a Jiangshi, a Chinese hopping vampire/zombie, while Mei-Ling became a sentient talisman affixed to Hsien-Ko's hat. As the talisman, Mei-Ling prevents Hsien-Ko from losing control or descending into berserk states. They function as a combined entity, with Hsien-Ko as the "body" and Mei-Ling as the "mind" during their missions as Darkstalker Hunters.
After freeing their mother's soul, the twins sacrificed their spiritual energy, facing nonexistence. Their mother reincarnated them as normal human twins. At age 16 in this new life, identical birthday dreams awakened a psychic connection, drawing demon Jedah Dohma's attention. This caused both to fall into comas, their souls transported to the demonic realm Majigen. There, they regained their past-life abilities and forms without their memories, fighting to survive and return to their human lives with their mother's spirit aiding them.
Mei-Ling's abilities focus on her talisman role, suppressing and stabilizing Hsien-Ko's powers. Separation weakens or nullifies Hsien-Ko's abilities, underscoring their interdependence. While her powers are primarily defined by this function, she demonstrates proficiency in combat and weaponry in some media, wielding swords, boomerangs, bombs, chains, and bonsai plants. Her human form exhibits martial skill, notably as a capable sword wielder in the Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge OVA.
Personality portrayals vary. Early depictions in Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge show her as serious, prepared, and driven by the mission to save their mother's soul. Post-reincarnation, without prior-life memories, she is characterized as a typical teenage girl adjusting to supernatural circumstances, often described as kind, humble, witty, skilled in weaponry, and valuing authenticity. The OVA adaptation presents a divergent portrayal, depicting her as irritable, openly rude, and prone to sarcasm. Her relationship with Hsien-Ko is central, defined by profound loyalty and shared purpose across lifetimes. Their combined fighting style relies on seamless coordination, with Mei-Ling's talisman form enabling Hsien-Ko's most potent abilities.
Outside the main series, Mei-Ling appears in human form during Hsien-Ko's game endings and flashbacks. She makes cameos in Street Fighter Alpha 2, Marvel Super Heroes (as one of Anita's powers), and Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. She is a hidden playable character in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and features as a special DLC costume for Hsien-Ko in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. In non-game media, she appears in the Darkstalkers animated series with a divergent backstory where Demitri killed her and her parents, leaving Hsien-Ko as the sole survivor. She also features in Udon Entertainment's Darkstalkers comics and the Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge OVA, where she and Hsien-Ko search for a way to free their mother's soul.
