Movie
Description
Ryuta Kondo is orphaned by the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Struggling alone for food and shelter in the devastated city, he attempts to steal rice from a shack. Gen Nakaoka discovers him, mistaking Ryuta for his deceased brother Shinji due to their resemblance. After Ryuta explains his situation, Gen and Kimie Nakaoka unofficially adopt him into their family.

Ryuta forms a gang of fellow bomb orphans, operating from a hillside cave hideout with a military structure; he is the "Food Commander." Members include Riceball, Onion, Badger, Acorn, and Kachin. The gang initially secures rations by claiming to feed families. When rations cease, they steal crops from farmers, leading to Onion's death and arrests. Ryuta later reunites with surviving members after encounters with American soldiers, one resulting in Kachin's death during a failed supply theft. Despite losses and the destruction of their hideout, the remaining members stay together.

Driven by Kimie's declining health from radiation sickness, Ryuta turns to crime to fund her medical care, including robbing gangsters. This results in his arrest and incarceration in a reformatory prison. He escapes, rejoining Gen to help publish Matsukichi's novel documenting the bombing's horrors. Their activism leads to detention and interrogation by American authorities. Following release, Ryuta participates in sabotaging American vehicles before returning to support the Nakaoka family.

After Kimie's death, Ryuta continues living with Gen and other survivors. He finds inspiration in the Hiroshima Carp baseball team and supports Katsuko and Natsue's dressmaking business by selling their products. When their partner Musubi squanders savings due to drug addiction and later dies from a gang beating, Ryuta kills several gang members in retaliation. He then flees to Tokyo with Katsuko for a fresh start.

Ryuta exhibits resilience and leadership alongside emotional vulnerability. His relationship with Gen remains central, defined by shared trauma and mutual support. In grief, like after Tomoko's death, Ryuta consoles Gen by pointing to wheat grass sprouting amidst ruins—symbolizing regrowth and hope. He observes Gen's hair, lost to radiation, beginning to regrow, interpreting it as a gift from the deceased Tomoko. His arc concludes with his departure for Tokyo.
