Description
Eiko Nakaoka, eldest daughter of the Hiroshima-based Nakaoka family, supports her pregnant mother Kimie by managing household chores and overseeing younger brothers Gen and Shinji. Her domestic responsibilities intensify due to Kimie’s pregnancy and malnutrition, demanding greater effort despite Eiko’s own frail health. Gentle and empathetic, she navigates wartime hardships alongside her family, enduring food scarcity and social ostracization stemming from her father Daikichi’s anti-war stance.
On August 6, 1945, Eiko shelters at home with Daikichi and Shinji when the atomic bomb detonates. The collapsing house traps all three beneath debris. Kimie and Gen attempt rescue but cannot shift the heavy wreckage. As fires engulf the area, Eiko perishes in the flames with her father and brother. Her narrative concludes in this early tragedy, illustrating war’s impact on civilian family structures and young women’s domestic roles.
