Description
Misao Amano is a shy, introverted, and melancholic fourth-grade student living in Tokyo. Physically frail and unathletic, she struggles with socialization and self-doubt. Her home life involves significant neglect; her father left Japan for a music career, and her mother often works late, sometimes absent for days. This isolation breeds deep loneliness, though she finds rare happiness with her best friend, Sasami Kawai, and Sasami's family. Despite insecurities, Misao is academically diligent and musically gifted, excelling at piano, singing, and composition—a talent inherited from her father. Secretly, she envies Sasami's confidence, supportive family, and brighter life, while genuinely valuing their friendship.
Unbeknownst to her, Rumiya, brother of the sorceress Ramia, forcibly transforms Misao into the magical girl Pixy Misa via hypnosis. Ramia selected Misao as a "kindred spirit" due to their shared resentment and melancholy, aiming to sabotage Tsunami's ascension as queen of Juraihelm. The transformation alters Misao physically: her hair turns blonde, eyes shift to gold, and she grows taller, adopting a flamboyant burlesque-inspired outfit with feathers, gloves, and a fan reflecting early 20th-century rebellious femininity, contrasting Pretty Sammy's innocent aesthetic.
As Pixy Misa, her personality becomes the antithesis of her civilian self: brash, theatrical, and extravagantly confident. She revels in chaos, summoning "Love-Love Monsters" from everyday objects to spread mischief and challenge Pretty Sammy. This persona acts as an outlet for Misao's repressed jealousy, anger, and frustration, particularly toward Sasami, whom she battles as Pretty Sammy. Hypnosis-induced amnesia prevents Misao from recalling her actions as Pixy Misa, and the physical and behavioral shifts conceal their shared identity.
Her development culminates in *Magical Project S* when she discovers her dual identity and learns Sasami is Pretty Sammy. Wracked with guilt, she flees and temporarily loses control as her magic destabilizes. Pixy Misa reveals she originated from Misao's suppressed sadness and envy, not solely Ramia's influence. With Sasami's forgiveness and encouragement, Misao confronts and accepts this darker aspect. Later, she voluntarily transforms using "Pixy Mutation Magical Recall" to aid Pretty Sammy against Romio. This act redeems Pixy Misa, who becomes a heroic ally. Post-reconciliation, Misao integrates Pixy Misa traits into her civilian life, displaying increased confidence, playfulness, and occasional bluntness with Sasami.
In other media, like the *Pretty Sammy* OVA, her role as Pixy Misa follows a similar arc of unwitting antagonism and eventual self-awareness, though *Magical Project S* expands her psychological journey and redemption. Cameo appearances in series like *Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure* and *Battle Programer Shirase* (as her great-niece) affirm her multi-franchise presence.
