Description
Ginji Kawai is the father of Sasami Kawai and the husband of Honoka Kawai in the television series Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. His precise occupation is never clearly defined, with his daughter only able to describe it as doing all kinds of things, a description that proves to be surprisingly accurate. He is a man of immense and varied talents, holding an extraordinary collection of licenses and qualifications, including a Class A International Driver's License, certification for unlimited operation of two-wheeled vehicles, a Class 2 plane operation license, rank three in the Japanese Abacus Federation, and even credentials as a NASA astronaut. His past is also notably colorful, having served as a member of a SWAT team, which contributes to his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and other tactical skills.

Personality-wise, Ginji is overwhelmingly cheerful, suave, and devoted to his family, prioritizing their closeness and happiness over any career that would demand his absence or promise fame and wealth. This stands in stark contrast to other fathers, like Shigeki Amano, whose pursuit of work overseas leaves his daughter Misao envious of Sasami's involved and fun-loving parent. Ginji’s endearing eccentricities are a hallmark of his character, most famously his habit of saying good night to Sasami in the morning simply because he enjoys the sound of the phrase. He is often seen driving a distinctive yellow motorcycle with a sidecar, which he uses to transport Sasami to school and on other outings.

Despite possessing no magical abilities of his own, Ginji plays an active and surprisingly effective role in supporting Pretty Sammy, initially without realizing the heroine is his own daughter. He begins by investigating and recording her battles with a camera, but soon evolves into a direct, if unconventional, ally. His practical skills repeatedly prove invaluable; he has used shuriken to disable a revolver, simultaneously manipulated six water hoses to extinguish a large fire, and constructed a large wooden raft to rescue a group stranded on a deserted island after a volcanic eruption. His unique charm is also a weapon, most notably when he bypasses a magical barrier by professing his love to the Break-Up Girl monster, which inadvertently triggers his wife Honoka’s jealous wrath. This charm, which he refers to as his Dandy Power, is later used strategically to distract the villainous Lovely Madams. He also collaborates with the scientific genius Washu, with the two adopting the playful code names Johnny for himself and Catherine for her. It is through this partnership that his NASA certification comes to the forefront, as he volunteers to pilot Washu's rocket on a critical mission to the magical realm of Juraihelm, though his excitement during the launch causes him to lose control.

Ginji's relationship with his wife, Honoka, is characterized by profound mutual affection, frequently depicted with the two embracing. Their emotional bond is so strong that Honoka can sense his love signals even when he is stranded on a distant island. They work together, such as when they launch a Pretty Sammy-themed event to revitalize their failing family business, a video store named CD Vision attached to their home. The Kawai family residence is further detailed in the Bonus Theatre specials, which reveal a hidden basement containing a butler named Alfred and a vehicle called the Sammy-Mobile, secrets unknown even to Sasami. Throughout the series, Ginji's love and support for his daughter are unwavering, culminating in the final episode where he explicitly acknowledges Sasami as Pretty Sammy, expressing complete confidence in her ability to save the Earth. After her final battle, he observes that his daughter has begun to act more mature, a testament to her growth throughout her journey.
