Hiroto Shinohara transfers to Academy Island, an institution where competitive games determine student rankings, the highest being the Seven Star. He possesses long black hair, brown eyes, and a natural poker face advantageous in deception-based games. Mistaking Rina Akabane for Sarasa Saionji, he defeats her in a duel, accidentally rising to the Seven Star rank. This forces him into a continuous bluff, as he is actually a One Star student who must maintain the facade of the strongest to avoid expulsion.
He possesses the "red star" ability, granting him the power to tell lies undetected, crucial for maintaining his false status. Despite an outward confidence and charismatic demeanor, he conceals vulnerabilities including guilt and self-doubt stemming from a troubled past. These insecurities drive his manipulative and deceitful actions. His journey involves confronting the consequences of his lies and seeking redemption through self-discovery.
Hiroto forges a pact with Rina Akabane, who had been impersonating Sarasa Saionji. They mutually agree to protect each other's secrets: Rina searches for the kidnapped real Sarasa, while Hiroto searches for a missing childhood friend he believes is on the island. This alliance, though marked by clashes due to strong personalities, becomes central to his mission. He receives support from Shirayuki Himeji, a resourceful maid assigned by Principal Ichinose. Shirayuki provides tactical assistance, housekeeping, and backing from her organization, "The Company," which uses hacking and behind-the-scenes manipulation to maintain Hiroto's deception.
His relationships develop significantly. After initial conflict with Sarasa/Rina, he builds trust and companionship with them, united by shared secrets. His dynamic with Shirayuki evolves from formal reliance into genuine mutual respect and cooperation, particularly valuing her strategic acumen and support. Hiroto's determination to remain on Academy Island, despite exposure risks, is fueled by his unresolved goal of locating his childhood friend, indicating a persistent and driven character aspect.
