Description
Odate Buta, a robot pig from the Yatterman series, debuted in Episode 60 of the original 1977 anime. It typically emerges climbing a palm tree or pylon whenever Doronjo praises Boyacky, delivering the Japanese proverb "Buta mo odaterya ki ni noboru" ("Even pigs will climb trees if you flattered them") in a deadpan tone. This phrase serves as a recurring comedic insult directed at Boyacky or other Doronbo gang members. The character rapidly gained immense popularity, surpassing the Dochirake Skeleton as the primary Doronbo gang mascot and becoming emblematic of Yatterman overall, resulting in its own theme song and companion record toward the end of the original series.

Variations of Odate Buta appeared in subsequent Time Bokan franchise installments. In Otasukeman, it was often accompanied by a female pig robot; their catchphrase extended to "Buta na koisuru hana ni naru" ("Love can blossom between pigs"), with interactions including affectionate nose embraces and later appearances of piglets. Later Yatterman episodes introduced Ohome Buta (Praise Pig), which sarcastically exclaimed "Hey there it's all good! It's great!" typically before battles, and Nageki Buta (Grieving Pig), which lamented "Pitiful, pitiful! Why do I even exist?" during the gang's failures or blame sessions.

In the 2009 live-action film, Odate Buta maintained its core association with Boyacky but featured a more mechanical design, a higher-pitched voice, and a verbal tic ending sentences with "bu" ("oink"). It appeared three times: first attempting to cover a pantsless Boyacky before being kicked by Doronjo after an unwanted hug attempt; second delivering an innuendo-laden version of its signature phrase during a mecha battle prompted by Doronjo flattering Boyacky; and finally lamenting the Doronbo gang's breakup near the film's conclusion. This iteration consolidated the roles of Ohome Buta and Nageki Buta. The character's cultural resonance is evidenced by merchandise like celluloid guitar picks featuring its likeness and its proverb being adapted elsewhere, such as the ghost character Le-Onarabu Dabenki's ascension line "Rei mo odaterya ten ni mo noboru" ("When flattered, even spirits can ascend to heaven"). Across all media, Odate Buta functions as a comedic foil reflecting Boyacky's reactions to flattery while evolving into a franchise mascot.
