TV-Series
Description
Yatta-Wan began as an unfinished prototype rescue robot shaped like a dog, designed by Tokubei Takada. Discovered and completed by Gan Takada and Ai Kaminari, its activation transformed them into the heroic Yatterman duo. Its name merges "wan" (Japanese for a dog's bark) with "one," reflecting its primary function.
Physically, Yatta-Wan blends a stylized canine form with firetruck components. Key features encompass a prominent siren, a bell atop its nose, nostrils that fire iron pellets, and retractable firehoses mounted on its back. Occupants hold onto handles located on its shoulders and stomach during movement. Activation demands manually cranking a handle, followed by operating a lever for locomotion. Expressive cheek-mounted flags raise during displays of confidence.
Functionally, Yatta-Wan consumes a bone-shaped "Mecha-Tonic" power pack for temporary strength surges, often to endure critical damage. Its signature attack deploys miniature animal-shaped robots, typically land creatures like crocodiles, turtles, or ants, launched via an extendable ladder from its mouth. These mini-robots swarm and dismantle enemy mechas, culminating in a skull-shaped explosion. In combat, Yatta-Wan frequently executes a victory pose by stomping its foot while exclaiming its name.
In the original 1977 series, Yatta-Wan sustained critical damage during a missile attack in episode 45. It was rebuilt into Yatter-King, a larger dachshund-fire engine hybrid featuring enhanced weaponry like a firehose tail, projectile launchers, and the capacity to carry smaller auxiliary robots. The 2008 remake reimagined Yatter-King as a combination of Yatta-Wan and the fighter-oriented Yatter-Zero.
Later appearances introduced variations. The Royal Revival OVA featured an upgraded "Yatter-Wan FZ" with built-in rockets, an orchestral fanfare for mini-robot deployments, and improved resistance to enemy seduction tactics. The 2009 animated film established Yatter-Zero as Yatta-Wan's evil counterpart. The live-action film adapted the character as "Yatterwoof," retaining the core dog-mecha concept, naming its upgraded form Yatterking.
Yatta-Wan appears in several video games. It features as a boss character in *Bokan to Ippatsu! Dorobo!* and *Bokandesuyo*, with the FZ variant included in the latter. It is also an unlockable racer in *Bokan GoGoGo*. In *Tatsunoko vs. Capcom*, Yatta-Wan's abilities form the basis for Yatterman-1's special attacks, including charging maneuvers, fire breath, and deploying miniature crocodile robots.
