Description
Yuuichi Kannami, a genetically engineered humanoid known as a Kildren, exists in perpetual adolescence, bred to pilot fighter craft in orchestrated corporate wars. His existence cycles through rebirths, each iteration inheriting fragmented memories and combat skills from predecessors like Jinroh Kurita—a figure he physically mirrors. Echoes of Jinroh linger in his habits: snapping matchsticks after lighting cigarettes, instinctive recognition of places and faces from Jinroh’s past.

Deployed to a remote airbase, Yuuichi assumes Jinroh’s former role, piloting his aircraft and piecing together traces of his predecessor’s life—including a romance with base commander Suito Kusanagi, who ended Jinroh’s life in an alleged act of mercy. Yuuichi mechanically replicates routines—smoking, drinking, fleeting liaisons—devoid of emotional engagement. His encounters with Suito remain tense, bound by their entangled history and her unresolved remorse.

A prodigious pilot, Yuuichi wields aerial prowess honed across lifetimes, balancing tactical detachment with a dawning curiosity about the Kildren’s endless conflict. This introspection drives him to challenge the Teacher, an invincible adult ace embodying the futility of Kildren existence. His deliberate defiance—a bid to shatter the cycle—ends in death, a fleeting rebellion against predestination.

His interactions with Mizuki Kusanagi, Suito’s daughter, expose a weary acceptance of stasis. When pressed on adulthood, he deflects, claiming Kildren "choose" not to mature—a veneer cracking when he implores Suito to survive until change arrives. His demise heralds Isamu Hiragi’s arrival, a near-identical successor, echoing the system’s unyielding repetition.

Exchanges with figures like Fuuko, a prostitute recognizing him as Jinroh’s duplicate, and Tokino, a fellow pilot indifferent to recycled lives, underscore his disposability. These interactions frame him as a replaceable component in a dehumanizing machine, his quiet introspection contrasting the apathy surrounding his transient existence.
