Russet Clagg hails from a Wisconsin family running the state's largest kennel. His father adopts a wolf pup, Gray, after its mother dies, raising him with their dogs. Gray matures with unique white fur but suffers harassment from a champion boxer, Bo. When Gray breaks free and kills Bo in self-defense, he escapes into the wilderness. Russet pursues, discovering Gray reverting to wild instincts and shunning humans. Authorities, suspecting Gray killed Russet, form a hunting party led by Bernard "Bull" Shott to eliminate the wolf.

Russet commits to guiding Gray north to the safety of Nicolet National Forest, home to free-roaming wolves. Their journey demands wilderness survival while evading hunters. They face multiple challenges: surviving on stolen farm food, Gray sustaining a chest wound in an ambush triggered by a recorded wolf howl, and a near-miss with a semi-trailer while crossing a highway. Russet adapts to survival tactics like hunting game and using waterways to mask their scent.

The journey intensifies after Gray kills a calf and steps into a bear trap near Tigerton. Russet frees him, but the incident draws more hunters. Hiding at a beaver dam, Russet tends to Gray's injured leg. Shott eventually corners them, but Russet intervenes, declaring Gray his friend deserving freedom. Persuaded, Shott abandons the hunt and gives Russet Bo's dog tag. Upon reaching Nicolet National Forest, Gray allows a final affectionate touch before joining a wild wolf pack, confirming Russet's success in securing his freedom.
