Description
Jack "Lostman" Woodbridge begins his journey as a mountain climber scaling Mount Everest alongside companion Gorou Saruwatari. Observing the International Space Station from the peak inspires both men to pursue space careers. Lostman chooses a military path, becoming a US Navy pilot to achieve this ambition.

During an Iraq mission, enemy fire shoots down his aircraft, leading to his capture. After escaping captivity, he forms a significant bond with local father and son Achmed and Malik. Achmed later sacrifices himself to save Lostman and Malik by detonating a landmine, an event that profoundly impacts Malik. The boy eventually moves to the US, pursuing model rocketry while confronting anti-Arab racism.

Lostman faces professional rivalry from his superior, Captain Brian, who acts out of jealousy. Brian intercepts Lostman's transfer orders to NASA and forcibly assigns him to a perilous mission that results in another shoot-down. Following his return, Lostman receives a promotion that reverses their ranks.

He participates in testing advanced spacecraft like the X-68 Nightmare and X-77 Star Fighter as part of secret US military operations from Area 51. These missions involve combat exercises and covert activities, including destroying a Chinese anti-satellite weapon—an engagement that escalates into a mutually damaging dogfight.

Throughout his career, Lostman maintains a competitive yet distant relationship with Gorou. Both strive to reach the moon via separate paths: Lostman through the US military and Gorou through the civilian International Space Association. Their rivalry surfaces only in internal monologues, lacking direct interaction in later years. Lostman's story culminates in his arrival on the lunar surface, fulfilling the goal conceived during their Everest ascent.
