Description
Renji Asou is a 16-year-old half-German, half-Japanese student living in Otowa, Australia during the events of Memories. He resides solely with his mother, Sumire Asou, while his German architect father works overseas. Constant relocations from his parents' travels hindered his ability to form lasting friendships, driving him to embrace books intensely and self-identify as a "book junkie" who dreams of becoming a novelist.

His neighbor Shuichi Kuze unsettles Renji by openly pursuing Sumire, who reciprocates the flirtation. Seeking refuge, Renji frequents an abandoned train station. There he meets Chihiro Shindou, a girl with an eyepatch covering her left eye. Though both are shy, Renji visits daily to forge a connection.

He discovers Chihiro endures severe anterograde amnesia, which erases her memories every 13 hours while leaving pre-accident recollections intact. Learning of her abandoned ambition to write a fantasy novel, Renji collaborates with her to finish it, realizing the story allegorizes her life and fractured reality perception.

Despite warnings from Chihiro’s guardian Yuu Himura about inevitable emotional pain, Renji deepens their bond and supports her struggles. His persistence helps them overcome setbacks, evolving into a romantic relationship by Memories’ end.

In Melodies, set two years later, Renji is 18. He attends night classes at Otobane Academy preparing for college entrance exams. His unwavering commitment to Chihiro anchors his life, showcasing his growth from an isolated book-lover to a devoted partner confronting her condition’s challenges. His family includes his mother Sumire and cousin Mizuki Hayama.
