Description
Originally an Earthen human forcibly taken to the subterranean Inner World, Mantid served as a warrior for the benevolent Spirit Oracle. The death of his lover, Loraine, during the conflict shattered his faith, fueling deep resentment towards the Oracle and its world. He abandoned his allegiance, consumed by a desire for revenge.
To seize power, Mantid devised an elaborate deception. He encased himself within a mechanical exoskeleton mimicking a mantis-like Invectid, presenting himself as the pinnacle of their evolution. This disguise enabled him to assume command of the Invectid Nation, manipulating its forces. For years, he directed military campaigns from his fortress, aiming to eradicate humans and locate the Oracle Keys—artifacts holding fragments of the Oracle's power. His physical survival depended entirely on these Keys; without their energy, his body weakened and turned deathly pale.
Mantid's core motivation was vengeance against the Spirit Oracle, whom he blamed for his displacement and Loraine's death. He sought to harness the combined power of the Oracle Keys to inflict suffering upon the Inner World. His plan involved manipulating others, including the brainwashed Spider Rider Aqune, used as a weapon against his enemies. He also observed the human protagonist, Hunter Steele, recognizing parallels to his own past arrival.
During the climax, Mantid captured Hunter and attempted to trick him into surrendering the Oracle Keys. Confronted by the legendary hero Quake and the Spider Riders, Mantid revealed his human origins and motivations, detailing how the Oracle's actions had warped him. Despite having Hunter at his mercy, Hunter chose to spare him, offering redemption. This act of mercy prompted Mantid to relinquish his vendetta.
The Spirit Oracle subsequently restored Mantid's human form and reunited him with the revived Loraine. Both were returned to the Outer World, concluding his involvement in the Inner World's conflicts. Throughout these events, his human facial features remained obscured, even after his transformation.
