Description
Aika Morimura, a 14-year-old girl haunted by her father’s disappearance during a yachting accident a decade earlier, clings to belief in his survival despite public skepticism. After her mother, a hat designer, relocates to Paris for work, Aika adjusts to life under her uncle’s guardianship near a coastal town. The subsequent loss of her dog Papi—a parting gift from her mother—in a traffic accident deepens her solitude.

Her isolation shifts when Spank, a stray dog whose former owner vanished at sea under circumstances mirroring her father’s, enters her life. Initially wary of forming new bonds, Aika gradually connects with the cheerful, accident-prone Spank, whose antics disrupt her routine even as his loyalty eases her grief. Their shared history of loss cements a mutual dependence, blending solace with chaos.

At school, Aika befriends art-and-academics-oriented classmates Ryo and Shinako, while navigating rivalry with the aloof Serino, a wealthy peer whose detached demeanor mirrors her cat Micia—an unwitting object of Spank’s affection. Aika’s tentative romance with Rei, a boy tied to Spank’s past, falters when his accidental role in Papi’s death surfaces. Their strained relationship further unravels as Rei departs for Vienna to pursue classical music.

Media adaptations diverge in resolution: the manga unveils her father’s survival and secret second family, prompting a bittersweet reunion and Aika’s brief stay with him before his relocation to Paris. The anime instead confirms his death, compelling Aika to accept reality and move to Tokyo. Both iterations underscore her resilience amid familial fractures.

Later arcs introduce Seiya, a hang-gliding aspirant classmate, whose ambitions Aika supports despite early friction, highlighting her growing empathy and leadership. A manga-exclusive subplot involving Fujinami, Spank’s original owner, explores themes of responsibility when logistical disputes over Spank’s guardianship arise.

A temporary move to France separates Aika from Spank, who stays with new owner Ai. Upon her return to Japan, a custody conflict resolved by Rei’s intervention culminates in Spank choosing Aika, reaffirming their bond.

Her narrative threads consistently weave through loss, fractured trust, and community rebuilding, with Spank as her emotional anchor. Interpersonal dynamics with peers, family, and animals drive her growth, framing resilience not as triumph but as quiet persistence amid life’s turbulence.
