Description
Kaname Okiura, a reserved second-year at Prefectural Umineko Commercial High School (Umishō), manages the school's swimming team despite a paralyzing fear of water. This intense hydrophobia stems from a childhood near-drowning he attributes to a "mermaid" pulling him underwater, restricting him to water no deeper than his knees. As manager, he diligently oversees timing, performance analysis, error identification, and training optimization, remaining dedicated to the team's progress even amidst its chaotic members and their eccentric behavior. His quiet nature often contrasts with the team's antics, though he occasionally shows subtle reactions to female teammates' advances.
His life shifts dramatically with the arrival of Amuro Ninagawa, a transfer student from Okinawa who lives on a houseboat and joins the swim team. Amuro displays exceptional swimming prowess with a unique, mermaid-like technique and frequently swims nude without reservation. She insists they met before and becomes persistently attached to Kaname, often creating awkward or compromising situations. When her houseboat is destroyed in a storm, she and her father move into Kaname's home, sparking school rumors about their relationship.
Kaname gradually realizes Amuro is the "mermaid" from his trauma, understanding she accidentally caused his near-drowning during their initial encounter. This revelation, coupled with her encouragement, motivates him to confront his fear. He begins taking swimming lessons, initially building his confidence by teaching younger teammate Maki Ikuta ("Makio").
He attracts romantic attention from multiple teammates: Amuro is openly affectionate; Mirei Shizuoka harbors a secret obsession, once attempting to seduce him with aphrodisiac-laced chocolate; and first-year swimmer Maaya Nanako transfers to Umishō specifically to pursue him due to a childhood crush, viewing Amuro as a rival.
A five-year epilogue reveals Kaname has fully overcome his hydrophobia. He marries Amuro, fathers a son with her, and adopts a nomadic life at sea, moving away from conventional career paths.
