Movie
Description
Gonji "Gon" Abe is Akira Yanagisawa's childhood friend and commands respect as the leader of the sixth-grade boys in their Kiba, Tokyo elementary school class, set in Japan's post-WWII recovery year of 1956. His sturdy build matches his informal leadership of the boy gang, including Yoshio Kawabata, Kazuteru "Teru" Yoshimura, and Hiroshi "Hakase" Sugiura.
Involvement in an incident with Akira leads to their class being barred from a regional choir competition. After the marine accident claims their classmate Shizu Miyanaga, Gon strongly urges Akira to appeal to the school, a pivotal effort that ultimately sees the class reinstated for the competition, showcasing Gon's significant influence over his peers.
Gon undergoes a major shift when he unexpectedly transfers schools later in the story. His departure occurs as the class, guided by music teacher Ms. Sakamoto, prepares for the choir competition. The remaining students, including Akira, continue their preparations while holding Gon in their thoughts alongside their memories of Shizu.
