Description
Richard Jones, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed patriarch of the wealthy Jones family, is a self-made merchant. Despite significant financial success, his lack of aristocratic lineage fuels his stern demeanor and deep-seated resentment towards the nobility who once marginalized him. Paradoxically, he obsessively seeks their acceptance, viewing elevated social standing as essential protection for his family.

This drives his vehement opposition to his eldest son William's relationship with Emma, a working-class maid. Richard sees it as jeopardizing decades of effort. Instead, he pressures William to marry Eleanor Campbell, daughter of a financially struggling viscount, believing this alliance would secure a noble title. William's rejection of the engagement sparks Richard's anger and disappointment, interpreted as a betrayal of familial duty. During confrontations, Richard bitterly recounts his past struggles, accusing William of naivety about class barriers and lamenting his own sacrifices.

His marriage to Aurelia Jones, mother to children including Grace, Arthur, and Colin who share his coloring, was complex. Societal pressures of upper-class life contributed to Aurelia's declining health, leading to their separation. Richard expresses regret over the toll the marriage took on her well-being, yet simultaneously asserts he does not regret it, revealing unresolved conflict and perhaps underlying affection.

While primarily rigid and status-obsessed, moments hint at deeper layers. His regret regarding Aurelia suggests introspection, and his relentless social ambition stems from a desire to shield his family from his own hardships. However, these motivations consistently manifest in controlling behavior, particularly his attempts to dictate William's future.
