TV-Series
Description
Yūichirō Tajima anchors third base for Nishiura High School's baseball team, previously serving as cleanup hitter and reserve catcher. Before Nishiura, he played cleanup for the Arakawa Sea Breams, a Kantō-region select team, though his small stature limited his home run power. He chose Nishiura High primarily for its proximity to his home and his grandfather's garden, influenced by a past incident where his family inadvertently left him behind during his great-grandfather's hospitalization, motivating his desire to stay close to avoid being forgotten again.
Physically, Tajima has short black spiked hair, a row of freckles across his nose, a tan complexion, and stands 5'4", making him the team's shortest member. His expressions typically feature a wide, jovial smile.
Outgoing, confident, and shameless, Tajima openly discusses sensitive topics like masturbation or stripping without hesitation, often prompting reactions from teammates like Hanai and Izumi. Despite poor academic performance, he possesses exceptional recall for baseball game scores after a single exposure. He forms a particularly close bond with pitcher Ren Mihashi, acting as a protective older brother figure. Tajima frequently interprets Mihashi's unclear speech or gestures for others and is one of the few Mihashi argues with openly. This closeness extends off-field, with Tajima spending significant time at Mihashi's residence and their families using first-name terms.
Tajima's baseball abilities mark him as a prodigy. He claims never to have encountered a pitch he couldn't hit by the end of a game, a claim supported by his performance. During games, he demonstrates sharp observational skills and strategic insight, reading opposing pitchers to assist base runners stealing bases. He excels in batting and possesses a strong throwing arm with good reflexes. He enjoys catching fastballs, leading him to serve as backup catcher when Abe is unavailable. However, his small build restricts his power hitting, preventing home runs except in rare instances like Nishiura's second game against Sakitama. Tajima experiences moments of insecurity when Hanai assumes the cleanup role against Senda High and later when Hanai demonstrates home run power in practice he cannot match.
Tajima maintains a rivalry with Hanai Azusa, stemming from Hanai's perception of always being second to Tajima in most skills except height and power hitting. While they cheer as teammates, a competitive dynamic persists. He also develops a rivalry with catcher Abe Takaya, partly due to Abe's envy of Tajima's effortless understanding of Mihashi and partly Tajima's own emerging interest in the catcher position. Tajima openly admires team manager Chiyo Shino'oka, finding her cute, and humorously claims he would like coach Maria Momoe if she were 15 years old.
Trivia includes Tajima's one-minute commute to school contrasted with longer return times due to visits to Mihashi's house, his preference for girls with short or tied-up hair, and his role as third base coach during offensive plays. A notable quote reflects his competitive mindset: "I'll crush you, and the batter behind you, and the ones waiting on deck. I'll mow them all down!"
