Description
Gentarou, orphaned in the chaos of post-World War II Japan, is rescued by a Polish missionary whose guidance anchors his fractured youth. Haunted by wartime trauma, he ignites a monastery fire in an anguished outburst, an act that etches lasting guilt into his conscience. This incident steers his destiny, propelling him toward medicine as a means of penance. Decades later, as a doctor, he tends to the aging missionary in hospice, their reunion unraveling buried history. In a vulnerable confession, he admits his childhood arson, seeking absolution. The missionary’s forgiveness crystallizes Gentarou’s lifelong struggle—a trajectory from wartime loss and destructive shame to healing through service. His story intertwines with a fragile reunion: separated from his mother during the conflict, he later reconnects with her through the missionary’s persistence, a thread mending childhood rupture and cementing compassion’s role in his pursuit of reconciliation.
