The name "Maze" originates from "Meis," meaning "two of Mei," signifying their shared identity across both forms.
In the real world, Akira and Mei shared a close bond that evolved into a taboo romantic relationship, leading to parental rejection. This emotional connection persists despite their merged state. Mei dominates during daylight, exhibiting pacifism and reluctance toward violence. Akira awakens after sunset, displaying a contrasting personality—aggressive, confrontational, and sexually predatory toward women. He is loud, rude, and quick to engage in physical fights, though he shares Mei's protective instinct toward Princess Mill.
