Description
Nagasumi Michishio starts as an ordinary middle school student whose life shifts irrevocably during a family vacation at the Seto Inland Sea. After nearly drowning, he is saved by Sun Seto, a mermaid and daughter of a powerful yakuza leader. Strict mermaid law dictates execution for humans witnessing their true form; marriage becomes the sole alternative to spare both their lives. Nagasumi consents to this arrangement, immediately drawing hostility from Sun's father, Gozaburo Seto, and numerous Seto Group members.

Though initially timid and sensible, Nagasumi displays unexpected resilience under threat. He develops a unique "danger alert" ability, signaled by his distinctive ahoge (a strand of hair), granting near-superhuman reflexes to evade harm. This skill sharpens through repeated assaults, particularly from Seto enforcers like Maki. When Sun sings the "Song of Heroes," Nagasumi temporarily gains enhanced strength to confront enemies. Gradually, he learns to activate this power independently to protect Sun, showcasing increasing self-reliance.

Nagasumi's bond with Sun deepens significantly. Their marriage, born of necessity, evolves as he cultivates genuine love, openly declaring his feelings and proposing after she rescues him a second time. He endures social challenges at school, facing unpopularity fueled by jealousy over Sun and inadvertently sparking conflicts between her admirers and those of her rival, Lunar Edomae. His home life adds strain, marked by parental marital dysfunction: his mother dotes on Seto member Masa, leaving his father despondent, while both parents subject Nagasumi to physical comedy and neglect.

Nagasumi navigates persistent threats from multiple antagonists. Gozaburo repeatedly attempts to kill him, even infiltrating his school as a teacher to monitor Sun. Lunar initially tries to enslave Nagasumi upon him discovering her mermaid identity, later moving into his home and fostering rivalry with Sun. Further challenges arise from assassination attempts by Sun's self-proclaimed admirers like Kai Mikawa, who challenges him for Sun's hand, and scrutiny from Akeno Shiranui, a mermaid examiner tasked with deporting merpeople attracting human suspicion.

Nagasumi's journey culminates in heightened courage and protective instincts. During the Seto Group's conflict with Yoshio's forces, he demonstrates bravery to secure a future with Sun. By the series' end, he no longer relies solely on Sun's song for strength, instead channeling power from their bond to overcome foes. His appearance remains consistent: an average-built teenager with gray/black hair, a prominent ahoge, and gray eyes, typically wearing a black gakuran school uniform.
