Description
Souma Akizuki, an athletic student from St. Luminous College, finds himself transported to the fantasy world of End Earth alongside classmate Touka Kureha. Before this event, he harbors unrequited feelings for Kureha and grows frustrated with mutual friend Kaito Kiriya's obliviousness to her affections. His confession to Kureha is interrupted and implied rejection occurs just prior to their transportation.
During a monster attack in End Earth that seemingly kills Kureha, Souma awakens the ability to draw the legendary Spirit Sword Snow Moon Flower directly from her body, revealing himself as a "Soul Blader"—one who forms weapons from the hearts of individuals sharing a strong emotional bond with him. He initially wields Kureha's heart as his Soul Blade, expressing a desire to remain in End Earth believing it offers a place to be with her.
Early characterization shows Souma as impulsive, jealous of Kiriya, and prone to combat arrogance. This leads him to align with the kingdom of Seiran, resulting in violent clashes with Kiriya that inadvertently contribute to Kureha's kidnapping. Following this failure, he undergoes significant introspection. He leaves Kureha under Kiriya and Seena Kanon's protection, abandons her Soul Blade upon recognizing her love for Kiriya, and temporarily switches to a conventional katana.
A pivotal transformation occurs after encounters with the enigmatic Zero. Souma receives one of the Twin Dragon Rings and accepts Zero's charge to become the guardian of End Earth. This responsibility catalyzes profound personal growth, shifting his demeanor from rash to calm and diplomatic. He adopts a neutral stance in the continental war over the Holy Grail, striving for peace instead of choosing sides. He travels with companions Lazarus, Ryuuna, Elwyn, and Blanc Neige, forming distinct Soul Blades from each: a lightning sword from Elwyn, a holy sword from Ryuuna, a frost sword from Blanc Neige, a jade sword from Lazarus, and later a blaze sword from Mao.
Seeking purpose, he petitions to join the mercenary group Weissritter. The members unanimously elect him as their proxy leader during Mao's absence, recognizing his evolving leadership and charisma. His tactical decisions earn respect even from the official leader, Mao.
Romantically, he moves beyond his fixation on Kureha. He gradually develops mutual feelings with Mao, the cat-eared warrior who initially brought him to End Earth, with witnessing her sadness solidifying this bond. Consequently, when presented with the opportunity to return to his original world with Kiriya, Kureha, and Seena, he chooses to remain in End Earth with Mao and the Weissritter to continue safeguarding the world and closing Chaos Gates.
His Soul Blade abilities expand throughout his journey, ultimately drawing blades from multiple individuals including Kiriya (yielding the Holy Grail, his ultimate Soul Blade), Hiruda, and all Weissritter members. This combat versatility, combined with his natural athleticism and martial prowess—demonstrated when defeating a Beastman barehanded—marks him as a formidable warrior.
